Today in “The Fastest Way To Die” news:
People buying AI written mushroom field guides which is incredibly dangerous.
I can’t believe this has to be said: Don’t risk it.

Instead, why not invest irl Mycology books? You know, written by people who spent years learning how to differentiate between the HIGHLY LETHAL Deathcap from several nontoxic edible species. Or ask a friend with foraging experience to take you which is much safer.

@Astro_Jmona I know someone who was a lifelong forager who regularly read on mushrooms, and would go on walks to find them, sometimes eating as she went.

She misidentified one, and was found dead several days after going missing.

@positronrelay I’m incredibly sorry to hear that. I’m no mycologist, I stick to picking what I can identify. If I cannot identify what I picked, my microscope can help identifying the spores, or I choose not to include it, but mostly pick from areas I know of, and species I’m familiarwith that are safe to consume. Growing gourmet at home is super easy nowadays as well.
@Astro_Jmona Yeah. It's definitely a dumb way to die, but it's also an understandable one. Familiarity breeds complacency at the least, and as my uncle puts it, "I've never been bit by a brand new saw, but I've been bit several times by the one I've owned for 15 years."
