4am cracks of Lode Runner and Spare Change have served as an inspiration for me to finally learn how all this funny disk access really works, rather than having a tenuous grasp on it (at best) buttressed by _Beneath Apple DOS_.

For many years, my cracked copy of Lode Runner started with a text screen that read "CRACKED BY THE SURGEON".

#AppleII

@yakkoj could that have been “The Chief Surgeon”? I knew him briefly, when I was in the group Black Bag. Sadly I have not a single recollection about anyone in those groups other than their handles now 🙁. Too many years…

Here are a handful of Black Bag's Apple II release title page images:

@_slotek_ hehe, I’m pretty sure I made that Winnie the Pooh member list screen in fontrix.

@Gmatom

A few more BB crack screens can been seen here:

@Gmatom Black Bag... that's another group that had prominence in my childhood disk collection! ;o)

Unfortunately, back then I only had access to software from others, and didn't even have my own computer, so I didn't know anything about the scene whose products I was consuming...

@yakkoj i remember "disc jockey" and "the apple mafia" from cracked apple ii games...
@yakkoj Mine too. Always wondered about those mysterious figures like "Black Fire" and "Mr. Krac-Man."
Also those games were both just absolute bangers.
@yakkoj such a brilliant book, my copy of Beneath Apple DOS got pretty worn out from my going back to reread sections.
@hyc I actually broke the back of my first copy in various places. So I got another copy, and then sought out a PDF of it. Still very well-used.
@yakkoj @hyc nobody mentioning the OG Mr. Xerox?
