Several schools in Arkansas are defiantly teaching AP African American history. The state has warned them that the students will earn no credits.

Republicans continue to describe Black history as "indoctrination" and "teaching children to hate America" -- showing that they might benefit from the course themselves.

@futurebird Republicans clearly hate America. So they are already experts at that.
@jgordon @futurebird they really like the America that exists in their head, which is strangely dissimilar from the America that exists in actuality.
@floatybirb @futurebird Yeah. They hate the real real America.
@futurebird I hope students realize that “took the illegal black history course” is the kind of thing many college admissions committees will consider favorably.
@alexwild @futurebird The students may need to use that strategy for out of state schools.
@futurebird Can't colleges opt to award credits for this even if the schools teaching it don't? 😈
@dalias @futurebird I don't know, but most colleges will be happy to see it in your application packet.

@Nazani @dalias

True, though sometimes such courses are just as important to students who never go to college-- in a way it matters more for such students it's the last history they will learn in a formal course in their lives.

I've seen the positive impact this can have.

@futurebird @dalias How many kids who take AP courses Don't go on to college? That's why genuine history must be incorporated wherever possible- in English, art, yes, even math story problems.
@dalias @futurebird credit is based on the score of the test, not the grade in the class, right?
@grumpasaurus @futurebird I didn't dig deep enough to see if the states were trying to block students from participation in the tests or just not letting the classes satisfy needed HS credits to graduate HS.

@grumpasaurus @dalias

For college. Not for school.

@futurebird @dalias yeah for college credit you don't even need to take the class just sign up for the AP test right
@dalias @futurebird hell, even if they don't it's a great "extracurricular"...
@futurebird they are not just studying Black history, they’re making Black history.
@futurebird In Italy we would say an ancient Latin motto "Divide et impera". Latin motto ("divide and conquer"), which is meant to mean that the division, rivalry, discord of subject peoples benefits those who want to dominate them.😩
@futurebird Aren't AP credits given by the College Board and not the state?

@futurebird "Receive no credits." It was before my time, but I know the story of Virginia responding to segregation by shutting down the public school system in several counties.

History rhymes.

@mark @futurebird Arkansas governors have a certain history with schools - notably the Little Rock Nine and following Lost Year. They're probably trying to figure out how to make it illegal to teach about those.
@futurebird Republicans saying people hate America are literally ignoring what the US was founded for...

@afastaudir8
So that rich white land owners could avoid paying taxes to the crown?

@futurebird

I was aiming more toward freedom, though the US has never really been about that…
@futurebird i read a comment on another post which claimed they WILL give credit for European history.
@futurebird Those who do not want us to remember history, intend to repeat it.

@futurebird

Out of state schools that are not in the red slave states must take submission of the curriculum and the students' performance and credit them anyway if merited. This up to and including a their diploma, if necessary.

@futurebird Republicans thinking of themselves as America, and perhaps quite well-aware?

@futurebird I wonder how 'real' the threat is. It looks like students need World History, US History I and II, Economics and US Government to graduate.

It looks like the AP course would be an elective anyways, and they only need 24 Credits to get their diploma.

Something tells me that people taking a 'banned' AP course are probably on track to graduate either way...

@futurebird pre-coffee still laying in bed brain failed me... Arkansas only requires 3 history credits total. 22 total credits.

I don't see a risk to student likely to taking this class... Honestly, it would have been of interest to me *because* it wouldn't grant credit towards graduation...

@futurebird African American History should have been/still be part and parcel of *every* arts/culture degree program.

Ancient India was part of mine. It changed me.

@futurebird learning is the new smoking weed under the bleachers, rise up punk teens
@futurebird all I can say is that those are W schools

@futurebird People who know what has been taught has been designed to make you into a " 'merica" type of individual. They don't want the brainwashey stuff to change.

They can't say it like that, so it's "indoctrination". They fully know what's been left out of the history books. The history books were always getting chosen under that criteria.

@futurebird I wish I had been taught to hate America as a child; instead I had to learn it late in life
@futurebird
I wish they would have taught it in high school. I think we all need to learn history of other cultures.

@futurebird

if they want to transfer or work outside of arkansastan and floridisan they may want to have those classes on transcript even with no credits ...

@futurebird The US was founded on the principals that slavery and genocide were acceptable but paying taxes for your services was not. Furthermore, it hasn't changed that much. I say if more people took off their red white and blue glasses and saw this country as the flawed bully it is, it may be able to improve somewhat in time.
@futurebird it sounds like the course should be mandatory for all politicians.
