In light of recent & ongoing news, here are some dogs who have been in my dog’s head-level PO box:

First contact has been going well. It’s their turn to ask questions. The biped’s face moves and my translator squawks, “Are you <unintelligible>-based life forms too?”

The human and translator converse for a bit. “Element 6,” the translator clarifies.

I laugh, startling the human. “Do you name all the elements? Adorable! Next you’ll be telling me you name the stars.”

The human shifts uncomfortably.

@carbontwelve@notacult.social I used machine learning in my PhD. The use case there was data prefetching. This was an ideal task for ML, because the benefits of a correct answer were high and the cost of an incorrect answer were low. In the worst case, your prefetching evicts something from cache that you need later, but a 60% accuracy in predictions is a big overall improvement. Programming is the opposite. The benefits of being able to generate correct code faster 80% of the time are small but the costs of generating incorrect code even 1% of the time are high. The entire shift-left movement is about finding and preventing bugs earlier.

RGB displays are designed around average human rods and cones. Audio compression is designed around psychoacoustics — what the brain notices vs. filters out in sound, so compression can selectively damage the part your brain throws away anyway.

I have never seen science fiction acknowledge how fucking weird our MP3s must sound and how bizarre the color gamut of photographs on a luminous RGB or reflective CMY(K) display surface (including printed paper) must be to space aliens.

the entire history of paint mixing is like that to some extent. and we don’t necessarily need space aliens for this, human tetrachromats and birds with wider color gamut sensitivity exist

Asked to Write a Screenplay, ChatGPT Started Procrastinating and Making Excuses

Filmmaker Nenad Cicin-Sain tried to recruit ChatGPT to come up with a screenplay for his upcoming project — but it kept procrastinating.

Giving the GDL a taste of their own medicine 🔥

500 flyers were sent to GDL leader Dominic DiGiorgio's closest neighbors.

Dominic DiGiorgio runs the GDL's neo-Nazi merchandise shop out of his Port St. Lucie home. Many of the Nazi flyers that litter the country are shipped out of his home.
