Wheeling Sea to Sound, Day Two

A longer, harder day, and a new perspective from which to view a trail: That was Day Two. Longer and harder meant 27 miles with a lot more climbing. That’s where Zelda the e-bike shines, thou…

I'm going to mark my calendar for next year's Sea to Sound as soon as they tell us the dates! Day Three was beautiful and I want to do this again. What a feeling of freedom to ride for 70 miles the past 3 days, almost every last foot of it on a separated trail.

Wheeling Sea to Sound, Day Three

Day three: A delightful finale to a thoroughly delightful Sea to Sound ride! One notable difference between this and many large bike events: There wasn’t any emphasis on finishing quickly, or…

Sea to Sound ride was so fabulous! They produced a video with those of us who spent time in a power wheelchair for a small exposure to trails from a different vantage point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5uu8zFnqAM&ab_channel=Ian%27sRide #SeaToSound #SeaToSound2023 #trails #RailTrails #BikeEvents #BikeTooter #WheelsMoveMe #MoveEquity #MobilityJustice #wheelchair #accessibility
Policymakers in Power Wheelchairs

YouTube
@BarbChamberlain wow, that’s great! Have you heard of anyone doing this just to get around town?
@fbaum @BarbChamberlain Policymakers who thought the Week Without Driving was a big challenge, try a week without walking or driving!
@enobacon @fbaum I've seen these done and labeled something like an empathy experience. One of my former city council members in Spokane used a wheelchair in the snow and couldn't have gotten on a bus without the kindness of strangers when the chair got stuck because the sidewalk snow hadn't been cleared. Even better would be simply to elect and hire people with disabilities who bring the everyday experience, not the one-off like what I had although it was valuable.
@enobacon @fbaum Concern I've heard from some disabled people is that for someone who isn't used to it, this creates a false impression of what it's like to live with something that you have truly adapted to or have lived with your whole life. Someone who's trying a wheelchair the first time doesn't know the tips and tricks. I had experienced wheelchair users riding alongside coaching me. Definitely glad I did this on the trail and not on sidewalks without curb cuts!

@BarbChamberlain @enobacon yes, I've heard this, too. I wonder if a group activity would be helpful - and I'd certainly defer to what people with disabilities think would be actually helpful.

We had a lot of success doing a street survey and canvass in coordination with blind community members, and I think it was extra useful to include that input when advocating for changes.
