“Billionaire philanthropist” is an oxymoron. A true philanthropist would never amass that much wealth in the first place.
@dramypsyd And it 's a euphemism for "they started having a conscience".
@janwo A relative of mine who’s Catholic calls it “trying to buy your way into heaven” and that’s not my jam personally but it’s an apt analogy
@dramypsyd @janwo He shouldn't worry so much about super-riches, nor should you.
First, they never thought amassing money was in any way immoral. Second, imagine riches starting to give money away.
They practice philanthrocapitalism, so they're actually earning money from "philanthropy".

Poors won't disappear either, they have selective philanthropy that mainly benefits... riches

@dramypsyd @janwo

Yeah! Into capitalist "heaven" where they have to eat money all day and night until they get sucked into a black hole!
@dramypsyd @janwo
"And Jesus said 'give all your money to the poor and follow me.' And the man said 'I can't do that' and left."
@dramypsyd @janwo In the Middle Ages they called it “indulgences” and was one of the reasons for Martin Luther’s protests.
@dramypsyd ...they make sure they are spending others money...
@dramypsyd There's a reason the richest man on the planet is generally a villain, in fiction and outside of fiction.

@dramypsyd I disagree. The term "philanthropist" is tailor made for improving the image of rich people. Ask yourself: when was the last time a poor person was characterized a philanthropist?

I much prefer solidarity: equal people helping each other.

@pexlibanis Oooh ok I like this! If we strip the positive connotation from philanthropist it’s accirate
@pexlibanis @dramypsyd mutual aid is what we call that
@dramypsyd meaning "in all his gloriousness he still finds it in his heart to give a little even to the plebs."
(I hope to have found the right tone. I'm not a native speaker.)
@dramypsyd Never forget that Bill Gates made his money through practices so anti-competitive that Rockefeller would've been impressed. He's doing good things with it, but a whole lot more good could've been done a whole lot sooner if he hadn't done what he did to achieve it.
@dramypsyd Still waiting for that trickle down they keep talking about to start... any day now...
@philosophicalfish @dramypsyd it drives me batty when Republicans talk about how great they are for the economy. They're great for the wealthy ONLY, and usually at the expense of the country!! All data shows this!! 🫤

@dramypsyd

It's weird how we use that Greek "phil" (love) in philanthropist and pedophile when they're abusers of people and children.

@dramypsyd Not necessarily so, he/she could have inherited it and then philanthropically given it all away.

@dramypsyd I wonder if people reading this are aware of the Giving Pledge? Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have gotten 236 people, mostly billionaires, to agree to give away at least half of their wealth. They've collectively given $600B. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Giving_Pledge

(Major edits to my original post to be more helpful and less confrontational.)

@dramypsyd Yeah. Fuck them. They can keep their money.
@waterluvian @dramypsyd ... but only after they've paid their fair share of taxes.

I wonder if having that much money changes the brain, and not in a good way.
@dramypsyd What if they used their wealth to steal money from other billionaires and transfer it to something useful?
@dramypsyd I see that median household #wealth in the UK is ~£300k. What is reasonable? 100 times, £30m? 1000 times, third of a billion? Certainly not 'billions', half given away or not.

@dramypsyd

I think Chuck Feeney might count, as he did give it away.

@dramypsyd @Radical_EgoCom "philanthropist" is a title to whitewash reputations by giving away what amounts to a pittance of their value so gullible people will think it's generosity (when in fact it's mostly tax loopholes).
@dramypsyd Example: Dolly Parton is not a billionaire because she gives so much away.
@dramypsyd Thank you for saying this.
@dramypsyd Even if you were to ignore that, philanthropy has only ever been a bandaid solution at best, usually a tax dodge at worst.
@dramypsyd
Not so. Soros and Gates immediately blow that proposition out of the water.

@dramypsyd

I started to call them oligarchs and it fits pretty well.

@dramypsyd Luis von Ahn might be an exception.
@dramypsyd Case in point: Dolly Parton. She probably could've become a billionaire, but she keeps giving away money to really helpful causes.
@dramypsyd
And for years the church told us that the poor were there so that good people could give alms, practise charity. What sophistry.
@dramypsyd Let's make billionaires extinct
