So now the deadbird site, formerly known as Twitter, is inviting developers to come back and "build what's next" with the much abused API.

Twitter (and Reddit)'s greed-infused API restrictions wrecked a project we (ASU News Co/Lab) were doing to help journalists send corrections down the same social media pathways as the original journalism.

The idea that we'd ever work with them again is a sick joke.

@dangillmor they won't even let us use the API to scrape our own content. why the fuck would anybody that used to want to create anything with their API?
@dangillmor the “twitter dot com” in the ad is the icing on the cake.
@dangillmor I do hope you replied with a poop emoji...

Scaling up platform #enshitification is core to #Elmo + MBS / Hows-of-Saud mission of converting ALL #Twitter user data into #DataSet fuel to power their X brand private #AI services.

@JoBlakely @dangillmor a dead parrot has more life than the deadbird site
@dangillmor Is that Vivek Ramaswamy’s wife?
@dangillmor @elonmusk is a MAGAT self enriching narcissist.
@dangillmor Considering how they threw everyone who'd been developing for the API out at the drop of a hat, what makes them think anyone would come back and put more effort into the thing? I just don't get it.
I mean, I'm sure there will be a few. But they won't be the majority.
@dangillmor 哈哈哈哈哈,deadbird site, 是要笑死我吗....

@Sixiaojie
@dangillmor

還不是嗎?不但只整個網台都毀了,而且符號從小鳥變成大交叉,慌怕人家沒發覺整個系統都沒了,還不是 dead bird site 嗎?

自討苦吃。Disgusting.

@kwantum @dangillmor 就是说得太是了所以特别想笑啊...

@dangillmor Can I build an API that sends a poop emoji to Elmo every time someone tweets?
@dangillmor Elmo has no vision so none of this is long term. He will change his mind next week.
@dangillmor Oh #ElonMusk has them wrapped around his finger. Most haven't even left.
@dangillmor arent they charging now for the api ?.prices u cant afford for my pet project !

They shouldn't expect people will do it for free or that they have to pay for it, it's all about the Benjamins.

@dangillmor

@dangillmor To be honest, I find it hilarious now to watch X/Twitter (via other platforms) without being part of it anymore and tell myself "it's okay let the kids fight just stay out of it".
@dangillmor
Greed is still not a valid category of criticizing capitalism. It not a human trait to be greedy, but the force of competition under capitalism.
@dangillmor Don't developers have to pay just to use the API now?

@dangillmor

Locally, when they cut off the API, one of our advanced classes here in the college doing a research project suddenly got disrupted and had to find other options. Not a good time for those students.

Eff that company and its owner.

@dangillmor I have to admit "this is an X-developer" has a nice ring to it.
@dangillmor jeez, almost a million views and not even 200 likes
@dangillmor Their “hobbiest” pricing is still $100/mo. They want devs to pay *them* to build products.
It’s absurd.

@dangillmor A friend and former coworker of mine, a guy who's owned several businesses and taught me a lot of what I know about business, once explained to me why he was unwilling to even consider offers from someone who had publicly screwed over one of his other business partners:

Trust is like virginity. You get to lose it once.

@dangillmor Agreed. 💯 What a pathetic joke. Fortunately, and not surprisingly l, many mastodon accounts have come to fill the void of how my company was using 🐦 before. 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
@dangillmor
I'm not sure if anyone has actually looked into the limits. For $100 per month you can look at 10000 tweets, potentially less if any are retweets. I look at someone's timeline, maybe that's 100 tweets out of my quota. Think how quick you'd get through that. $5000 for the next tier. That's quite a lot! And you can't really test anything without paying as there are only about 3 endpoints on the 'free tier'
@dangillmor As GwB once said: "Fool me once, ain't never going to be fooled again" or something to this effect. Musk will learn that breaking things is easy, but regaining people's goodwill is a real challenge.
@dangillmor I've paid 100$ for the basic subscription, to be able to retrieve a user's followings, to find out that the endpoint had been disabled without notice (it's even still advertised in the basic plan description...)
Had to open a dispute with my payment card provider because twitter doesn't want to refund me... 😩
I will never try to use their API anymore...
@dangillmor After the way he cut off the old API with no warning? Why would anyone trust him enough to build a business on his product?
