Hell freezes over as Apple supports right-to-repair bill

As California legislation nears finish line, Apple suddenly switches sides.

@arstechnica Those hypocrites know they lost. They only switch sides so they can later claim they "already supported right to repair when the bill was introduced".

@arstechnica I wonder if they figured out some monetization model for this. (Certified parts? Etc.)

Or if it was just that their bean counters calculated that the legal exposure vs the 'juice'/revenue from repairs wasn't worth the squeeze.

@kurtsh @arstechnica they figured out they can monetize it. They can sell parts, reduce e-waste, and it makes the brand more valuable because you can fix it. Kills the competition because they won’t be able to afford it because of the smaller volumes.
@arstechnica - Apple supporting right-to-repair is about the only thing that can counter global warming…
@arstechnica
They probably figured out how to make a profit of it. Don't kid yourself. Apple, like all tech giants, is there first for the shareholders and profit maximalisation, and the customers are the necessary evil.
@arstechnica What, since they’ve made their entire lineup effectively unrepairable without ninja level soldering skills?
@arstechnica Ok Apple, that wasn’t hard. Now recognize your retail employees union.
@arstechnica
Tim says, “Absolutely, we support right-to-repair. Wait, we are just talking about Android and Windows devices, right?”
@arstechnica it's a PR move. Also being in support gives them partial control of the narrative, which gives them an opportunity to inject compromises or a poison pill.
@arstechnica my guess is they have realized the majority of their target market is never going to repair stuff themselves anyways.
@arstechnica let's be real here, they probably knew the bill was gonna pass and that there was nothing they could do to stop it. They probably just publicly backed the bill so they could be all "hey look consumer, we totally support you, now buy another product made in 2023 that still doesn't use USB-C".

If journalists actually covered Apple with the scrutiny Apple deserved, we wouldn't see all these "Apple Supports Right to Repair" headlines. It'd read more like: "Apple Issues List of Demands Required to Prevent Challenging California Right to Repair Bill with Expensive Lawsuits That would Cost Tax Payers Millions, and the Demands Seek to Entrench Apple's Current Anti-Consumer Business Practices While Misrepresenting the Services Offered by 3rd Party Repair Shops, Because Apple is a Bully and is LONG Overdue Regulatory Market Corrections." Admittedly, my headline here isn't quite as quick and punchy for that tasty SEO hit... #tech #apple #technology #news #journalism #righttorepair #geek

Does anyone here recognize the laptop model being repaired on the photo?
@arstechnica oh no, did the bill get gutted?
@arstechnica The hell freezes over metaphor has amused me ever since I read Dante - the usual picture of hell that everyone assumes - and discovered that the centre of hell, where you find traitors leading up to Judas Iscariot and Satan, is a great ice plain.
@arstechnica This is excellent news even if it wasn't strictly voluntary. Also a shot in the arm for the good folks at www.ifixit.com/
