Seems like a good time to repost this:

#TerryPratchett #Offense #Humour #GoodOmens

Sorry folks but a re-read of Good Omens is calling.

Have a great Sunday everyone. Me and Terry are reving up our motorbike engines, looking for the misplaced antichrist while staving of the rapture.

Enjoy!

Source needed: Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it’s not satire, it’s bullying.

This quote circled around the internet and was supposedly said by Terry Pratchett. I tried to find it's source, but found nothing but a tweet by...

reddit
@oligneisti I've always seen it attributed to Terry. The sentiment still definitely hits the spot with the current weaponised cruelty currently in vogue.

People also attribute to Einstein that quote about the definition of insanity, it doesn't make it true.

I am not arguing about the sentiment but I do think #TerryPrachett would have phrased it better.

@VCWillow

@oligneisti @VCWillow Did anybody check with alt.fan.pratchett?

Seems like a moot point since the origins of the misattribution is known (I think there is a copy of the Tumblr post available somewhere).

also tagging @thebibliosphere … srsly whe you look at the responses you can see that some people just didn’t read the explanation properly, and still want to blame the op and/or find someone...

@[email protected] @sunflowerinrain tumblr the every reliable source! Buddy, it's the intention and the sentiment that counts and that connects with people. Have a nice weekend.

Seems extremely disrespectful to #TerryPratchett.

@VCWillow @sunflowerinrain

@oligneisti @sunflowerinrain buddy, you seem to be taking offense at nothing but a quote saying don't punch down on people using humour, which Terry would have seconded and arguing for the sake of it. Stop it my friend
It is quite nice to have people boosting this after the OP blocked me.

@oligneisti @VCWillow I saw a link to the explanation but don't have a Tumblr account to read it. If others' reports of it are accurate, well done that person for admitting and explaining.

Mis-remembering and thereby mis-quoting is soooo embarrassingly easy. \me blushes at memories

@sunflowerinrain @[email protected] that all sounds a little too vague to be taken as accurate. But it has shown that you can never get everyone to appreciate the spirit of a post, even when it's in a shot glass right in front of them with 20ft flames lashing at thier eyebrows.
@VCWillow maakt niet uit of zijn quote of niet...
Lees zijn boeken en zorg dat je niet in je broek plast van het lachen...

@VCWillow Terry Pratchett was such a hero.
@VCWillow The quote makes and excellent point, unfortunately though, it is falsely attributed to Terry Pratchett.

@VCWillow Jesus fucking christ, the number of people desperate to be the smart one in the room by ignoring the quote and trying to prove Pratchett didn't say it is just amazing. Way to utterly miss the point, folks.

@VCWillow

As a deep dish fan of Sir Terry, I wanna say he'd probably find ppl arguing over a misattributed excellent thought, rather than applauding an excellent thought, something worth satirizing
😉

@VCWillow Not true. Satire is satire no matter who youre making fun of. Source: South Park
@VCWillow
Terry was a gem and the world is a little darker now that he's gone. Thanks for sharing this.
@VCWillow 1) Terry Pratchett got his start as a journalist and seemed to place some value on accuracy
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/may/30/terry-pratchett-predicted-rise-of-fake-news-in-1995-says-biographer
2) He did satirize people who were hurting, I would say that he often did it more carefully but he did do it: “Just because someone's a member of an ethnic minority doesn't mean they're not a nasty small-minded little jerk.”
3) There are so many witty humane things he did say, using an invented quote isn't needed.
Terry Pratchett predicted rise of fake news in 1995, says biographer

1. Who claimed otherwise? No one.
2. Strawman plus he satirised people's foibles, he never punched down. You satirise people's behaviour not their immutable characteristic such as race, gender, sexuality, gender identity or other characteristic based on bigotry.
3. It's on many respectable sites including goodreads etc, it's fair to view as genuine.

You seem to be missing the point satire and all good humour doesn't punch down.

@VCWillow

Hat #Nuhr mal wieder etwas ausgeschieden?

@VCWillow Well, this pops up as I am lying in bed not able to sleep and listening to Carpe Regulum

@VCWillow

Interestingly a lot of defenders particularly of recently failed presidents seem to invert this logic and accuse satirists of "bullying" those in power...

@VCWillow Whether Terry said that or not, I certainly agree with it.

Also legendary comedian George Carlin (whose material, particularly from the 90s and 2000s is still extremely relevant to this day) definitely says much the same here. Unfortunately 'anti-woke' conservatives still try to believe Carlin was on their side. These people rarely understand the joke is on them until strip away all subtlety and spell it out for them.

@VCWillow Unless that someone is Nadine Dorries. Then it's karma.
@VCWillow
Pratchett quote or not, it's still a very important message, and thus worth spreading.
#GNUTerryPratchett

@VCWillow how do you know people with power aren't secretly hurting and that's why they seek power?
people are people, anytime, anywhere.

im not being sarcastic, rethoric, nor trying to be funny. it's a genuine question.
i think it must be a sad life to only have power to care about. after all 'hurt people hurt people'.

@jerobarraco yeah my heart bleeds for those that use their power to bully others 🤣🤣🤣 /S
@VCWillow @LinuxAndYarn Funny thing: I explained what Jordan was doing—bullying— to get the ‘big job’ to my 3.5yo grandson today, and he totally got it.
