Seems like a good time to repost this:

#TerryPratchett #Offense #Humour #GoodOmens

Source needed: Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it’s not satire, it’s bullying.

This quote circled around the internet and was supposedly said by Terry Pratchett. I tried to find it's source, but found nothing but a tweet by...

@oligneisti I've always seen it attributed to Terry. The sentiment still definitely hits the spot with the current weaponised cruelty currently in vogue.

People also attribute to Einstein that quote about the definition of insanity, it doesn't make it true.

I am not arguing about the sentiment but I do think #TerryPrachett would have phrased it better.

@oligneisti @VCWillow Did anybody check with alt.fan.pratchett?

Seems like a moot point since the origins of the misattribution is known (I think there is a copy of the Tumblr post available somewhere).

@[email protected] @sunflowerinrain tumblr the every reliable source! Buddy, it's the intention and the sentiment that counts and that connects with people. Have a nice weekend.

Seems extremely disrespectful to #TerryPratchett.

@VCWillow @sunflowerinrain

@oligneisti @sunflowerinrain buddy, you seem to be taking offense at nothing but a quote saying don't punch down on people using humour, which Terry would have seconded and arguing for the sake of it. Stop it my friend
It is quite nice to have people boosting this after the OP blocked me.

@oligneisti @VCWillow I saw a link to the explanation but don't have a Tumblr account to read it. If others' reports of it are accurate, well done that person for admitting and explaining.

Mis-remembering and thereby mis-quoting is soooo embarrassingly easy. \me blushes at memories

@sunflowerinrain @[email protected] that all sounds a little too vague to be taken as accurate. But it has shown that you can never get everyone to appreciate the spirit of a post, even when it's in a shot glass right in front of them with 20ft flames lashing at thier eyebrows.
