Our bosses DESPERATELY want to fire us and replace us with plausible sentence generators

Prompting an #LLM is like giving notes to a screenwriter, minus the backtalk and eyerolls.

The only thing our bosses hate more than paying us is giving up a single, solitary molecule of #copyright.

Worker power comes from collective might, not individual, bargainable rights. A creative worker isn't an LLC with an MFA.

@pluralistic Don’t even get me started. (Looking at you, Disney Legal)
@pluralistic , what's the best way to read your Medium posts without looping in their surveillance network (app or login)? Burner email & randomized selection of "interests" during account creation flow?

@oborosaur @pluralistic somehow my answer https://indieweb.social/@mcrocker/110923372026991974 became decoupled from your question post. 😮

Short answer: Internet Archive WayBack Machine.

Mark Crocker (@[email protected])

@[email protected] @[email protected] Here's an @[email protected] Wayback machine link: https://web.archive.org/web/20230820182800/https://scribe.rip/everything-made-by-an-ai-is-in-the-public-domain-caa634a8f7f1 to the article. Naturally, at the time I tried to "save" the original link to the Internet Archive, just a few minutes ago, scribus was returning 500 errors! So, if I had saved it minutes before that, then it would have been even better because it would work when the original did not 😜

@pluralistic sorry, but this is dumb. the ruling is dumb. if the output of "algorithms" being manipulated by humans isn't copyrightable, then say goodbye to any computer generated art, because there are a ton of things that should apply. autotune your voice? sorry that was processed by an algorithm. photoshop a picture? public domain now, because adobe loves little automagic AI filters. the hate boner for shitty corporations is blinding us.

@wagesj45 @pluralistic All copyright is arbitrary. There’s no “natural mechanism” to enforce any of it. We just collectively decided that copying some things should be restricted and other things shouldn’t.

It’s completely reasonable to argue LLM content should get radically different protections than anything that has come before.

@birwin that's fair. there are many reasonable takes. we just fall on different sides.

this is one of those things where we are just gonna disagree, i think.

@pluralistic how can it be public domain when it’s all Derivative Works collages out of human peoples art? Like, the entire cohort of concept artists whose art was used to “train” the AI?
@pluralistic #AIart Their argument is AI trained on their work...but they learned from the great masters...sooo....thus by their own statement their own work can't be copyrighted either!
@pluralistic wouldn’t it be more accurate to say that AI-generated work is not copyrightable? “Public domain” means anybody can use it for any purpose. Given the rampant scraping / theft involved in training some of these AI models, some of the outputs are probably “derivative works” that wouldn’t land in the public domain.
@pluralistic I see this as a better outcome than either what AI enthusiasts or anti-AI people would want.
@pluralistic What if someone wanted to use AI to prevent things from being copyrightable? i.e. could someone generate billions of pop songs melodies and effectively prevent new pop songs from having copyright?
@xorn @pluralistic "Melancholy Elephants" by Spider Robinson.
@xorn I don't see why. The process of creation is what makes it copywriteable
@pluralistic
Until the corporation friendly #SCOTUS rules that if a corporation owns the AI algorithm then it owns whatever it produces, even if it is just mimicking human beings creations. After all they are the people that ruled corporations are people and money is speech.

@the5thColumnist

No, they ruled neither of those things.

In fact in ruling after ruling SCOTUS emphasized the distinction between corporations and real people, even though the press ignored what they were actually writing to say the opposite.

And they did not say money is speech, they said money can support speech, to help get messages out there, which is a very different thing.

These lies have been promoted way too often, and yeah they get clicks for sensational articles, but they are just wrong.

Always fact check.
