I miss the old Moves app that showed where I had walked throughout a day and where I had made stops along the way. All without needing to start a workout. Does anyone know of a modern alternative?
@simonbs that was a really nicely designed app. Especially for its time. Don’t know of anything like it now though

@simonbs I’ve used Arc App for a while, directly after Moves shut down. It even had (has?) a Moves import. Back then it used way more battery than Moves did. But that might have changed in the meantime

@simonbs there is also a slimmed down open source version by the same developer (Arc Mini) and the location recording is based on his LocoKit: https://github.com/sobri909/LocoKit (you’ll need to check the different branches, the default branch doesn’t have the latest state)

@fittschen @simonbs Moves was a great app, it was a shame Facebook killed it. I tried Arc a while back and it didn’t work as well, and looking it again, the pricing is really high.

@fittschen @simonbs +1 for Arc and mini Arc (back up to main Arc app if iOS kills either the other should continue to record) https://apps.apple.com/app/id1510217238

Takes a bit of “teaching” and time for it make good choices, and it helps if you keep a regular schedule and carry the iphone in a constant manner (same pocket) minimal extra battery consumption ime

@fittschen Thanks! I’ll give Arc a try.
@simonbs Oura ring with its iOS app records walks and other workouts in the background without you starting the workout manually. I specifically love that aspect of it. It also stores the routes of your daily walks.
@simonbs haven’t tried it myself (yet) but this looks promising (totally self-hosted) backend too https://github.com/aaronpk/Overland-iOS

@czottmann Thanks. This looks like exactly what I want but I will not give it a try since I do not endorse blatantly copying the features, the design, and even the name.
@simonbs @czottmann also, reviews suggest that it doesn’t work at all.

@simonbs Yes! I also loved that app and was bummed with a) Facebook bought it and then b) closed it down. Check out Arc https://apps.apple.com/app/id1063151918 - it's the modern equivalent(and is paid & private)

@iandundas @simonbs Arc is REALLY expensive though.
@simonbs oh wow. What a throwback. This app was awesome indeed!
@simonbs I use Arc app since Moves was discontinued. It's not perfect, but it can import Moves data and automatically export GPX files to your iCloud Drive, so you can migrate to another solution in the future. I haven't found anything better that "just works" and battery usage is OK in my opinion.
@simonbs I use WHIB for the plot/tracking but it’s a poor substitute.
@simonbs I loved that app, but had to stop using it because it was a battery hog on my device. Wonder if the experience would be better on modern devices?

@simonbs Moves was acquired by Gyroscope, I believe, and it’s not integrated into that app. I still pay for it happily; it’s excellent.

Correction: it was Facebook that bought Moves. Gyroscope, which used to depend on Moves to import location tracking data, had to rebuild equivalent functionality itself to replace it.

@simonbs @matthewcassinelli Yeah nothing I've tried since then has been as good. I used Gyroscope until it went paid. Then I used Arc for free until that became untenable. I pay for it now even though it's less accurate and more frustrating than Moves was back in the day. :-/

@simonbs
Yes. Yes. I’ve missed Moves too.

I’ve been using #OwnTracks for years because I completely control the data. It send the location to my server and I keep my history safe.

But it needs a way to analyses and present it like Moves did. For 5 years now I keep thinking I’d spin up a side project for this and never get to it. 😭

@simonbs I loved that app!

While it is not the same, I’ve been using LifeCycle for years:

@rod @simonbs I was just thinking of this! I haven’t used it in years; I think I was convinced it was eating my battery and also felt problematic from a privacy point perspective.

Part of me hopes the upcoming native Journal app in iOS 17 has some of this flavor

@simonbs Google Maps has this feature. Obviously it’s Google, but I’ve had it switched on for years and find it very interesting/useful.
@simonbs @viticci Google Maps does the same, although it is not this good
@simonbs such a lovely little app that was! Wondering what happened to it 🤔
@simonbs Gyroscope had this when I was a user, not sure if it does still, it’s been some time.

@simonbs I begrudgingly use Google Maps for this only because Google Workspace is essential for me, as much as I would like to extract myself completely from them. Honestly one of my favorite aspects of this is the integration with Google Photos. All this makes me feel like I’m going to get tomatoes thrown at me here.

Also might be worth looking at OwnTracks. https://owntracks.org/

OwnTracks - Your location companion

@simonbs @viticci Wanderings does a great job of keeping track of where you go with light battery usage. No points of interest integration but over the years it builds a VERY impressive map.

@simonbs really liked that app too. I'm puzzled why modern iPhones don't provide that functionality out of the box. They definitely could

Gyroscope is your personal AI coach. Optimize your sleep, mind, nutrition, fitness and much more! Now available in the App Store.

@simonbs @viticci I’m hoping the upcoming journal app from Apple will do something like this.

The closest one I think currently is Day One with the Places section in the Today view.

https://dayoneapp.com/guides/tips-and-tutorials/today-view/

Today view

Today view brings together entries created on a specific date plus allows users to create new entries using information from various sources

@simonbs gyrosco.pe https://apps.apple.com/us/app/gyroscope/id1104085053 does a lot, but their places does a pretty good job (looks like subscription required for places tracking, I think I got grandfathered in by being an early user). Arc https://apps.apple.com/us/app/arc-app-location-activity/id1063151918 is a more direct replacement, but I found it a battery hog. But that was a while ago, just redownloaded and restoring history to try it out again. Subscription required (2 month free trial). Bonus: has a Moves importer.
