Never buy a PC with a power button on top. N E V E R.

@sjvn

Or a shredder with a power button on the top 🤦

@sjvn
he looks kinda smug in the second picture. “Nice PC you got there, shame if it was to power off!”
@wa7iut @sjvn Yep.
I imagined him/her saying, “Do you see what I did there? There’s more where that came from (w/ the raised eyebrow).”
@sjvn Also watch out for exposed power strips… https://www.gocomics.com/breaking-cat-news/2016/01/18

PUCK: Theres a button under the computer desk that makes the man scream. LUPIN: Thanks PUCK! LUPIN here, next to the button that makes the man scream. And if I ever so gently step on it randomly for seemingly no reason - AUURRGHHHHH!!!! MAN: Lupin, don't touch this! LUPIN: OKAY! OH #@* MAN: Lupin, Im working. You can't keep doing that. LUPIN: I understand MAN: LUPIN!

@sjvn The wife had to tape a poker chip over her power button for this very reason.
@sjvn I am reminded of the time the family dog enthusiastically wiped my Dragon Warrior save. That got the NES off the floor for good.

@sjvn I have a cnc with a big red emergency stop button on the top of the control box.

Ask me how I learned that the button doesn’t just stop the device, it also sets off an ear piercing alarm that doesn’t clear until you reset the button.

@sjvn Have you tried turning cat off then back on again?

@eeyorc @sjvn

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Cat power button is NOT located under tail! Save yourself a trip to the ER and do not press fake button.

@sjvn One of my coworkers just had this exact experience a few weeks ago.

@sjvn My toddler son was at my office a couple months ago and was attracted to the blue light on the front my my work pc. Before I knew it, it had been powered off.
Praise for auto-save.
@D The same story as the original Molly Guard! http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/M/molly-guard.html

@sjvn oh my, I have a sneaking suspicion that my computer may not have been so vital. I had no idea that such a moment was the impetus for the button guard.
@D Yep! Kids and kittens never change, and our hardware is always endangered.
@sjvn I use a coaster to solve this problem
@sjvn my cat likes walking across the printer, pressing buttons and making sounds.
@sjvn My cat powered off my TV soundbar this way!
@sjvn
You've given up power you will never see again
@sjvn I love the change in looks in both pictures. In the first one, they're like, "Oh, this button? I would never!" and then it turns into, "Yeah, that's what you get for not buying the good treats."
@sjvn caption 1: what was that, you’re gonna feed me when you’re done?
caption 2: you’re done.

@sjvn

I had a UPS that could be wall-mounted if one had the tools. It was laid flat in the far corner of my workdesk instead.

One of my cats loved to lie on it cuz, warm. And sometimes did the button press.

@sjvn true that
@piratehonk Great expression!
@sjvn Aye, he is the high lord of this castle and all shall fear his mighty cuddles :D
@sjvn Cat: Scritches and/or treats or the glowing button gets pressed again.
@sjvn the Cube. Absolute perfection, but for one thing…

@sjvn

That little face! Those expressions! Priceless! 😄

@sjvn or just y’know don’t get a cat. Never had that problem with dogs 😛
@sjvn Ahh, yes! I had this very problem myself with my PC before I invested in my Anti-Cat Device, patent pending. For three small installments of $25 I can send you a device that will prevent your cat from turning on and off your PC. (Warning: Anti-Cat Device is only a bottle cap and some tape)
@sjvn i have the same Problem. But till now the cat was nice to me and never pushed the button.
@sjvn that cat knows what it did
@sjvn my last PC I disconnected the power button from the motherboard for exactly this reason. I unfortunately failed to on my current one and suffered much annoyance.
@sjvn We don't have cats, and mine is too high for the dogs to reach. But I quickly learned that plugging and unplugging USB devices into the top ports ("conveniently" adjacent to the power button) meant I needed to change the default behavior to counter accidental presses.

@sjvn

Hahaha, so funny, the look on its face makes it so perfect :D

How to disable (cleanly) the power button?

Systemd is configured by default to shutdown the computer when the power button is pressed. I want to keep this behavior, unless when my user is logged. When I'm logged in, I want to open a shutdown

@sjvn

uh-oh

well, he hasn't found it yet o_o

@sjvn That's a very smart cat. 😼
@sjvn Kitty is begging you to touch grass (and maybe catnip)
@sjvn true! My son loved turning my old computer off by pulling himself up on it. To the point I taped a piece of hard plastic over the top!
@sjvn yup. A case (heh) study for design/engineering students in concept vs reality
@sjvn
🥥 Also never buy a PC with a #cat on top. 🥥
@sjvn the cat knows what hes/shes doing, it was personal
@sjvn That's always been asking for it.
@sjvn the CPU can't be rotated 90 degrees?... or was the under monitor/tower dual orientation computer just an early 2000s thing?
@sjvn Feel you... one of my cats LOVES to sleep ontop of my pc case in the winter and has found out that she can play with that glowing button.
@sjvn Mine is on the side and hard to find.
@sjvn Completely innocent of whatever calumny you're trying to insinuate.😆 🐱
@sjvn Hello. Yes, it happened to me with a portable AC.
@sjvn So this button makes the hoomin pay attention to me...
@sjvn I solve this problem with a book that always gets knocked off the tower.
@sjvn My computer is protected, my router is fair game. 😱 😂 Why mess up one computer, when you mess with the internet connection for the whole family.
@sjvn devilish little fiend
@sjvn Had this happen more than once. It's a great case, ports on top for easy access and vertical card alignment is brilliant. I guess the cat-operated switches are a bonus feature? 'Time to do something else'.
