@flargh @davidbrin David Brin (if I may): We were headed for some bleak environmental nonsense, but humanity’s salvation (well, cause célèbre) came from first contact & the fact that we seemed anomalously not to have been Uplifted.
Then we thought about the ethics of Uplift & realized it had become a part of evolution that spanned the galaxy. We nevertheless realized that suffering, prejudice & injustice ARE to be fought, even if evolution only addresses survival.

@flargh Okay, so I met the Las Vegas shooter back on July 6, 2016. Wanna know what it was really about? Math.

As in removal of the machines he had played for years with a 100.8% payout (if played perfectly) 9 over 6 Jacks or Better Video Poker.

In fact, a CNN article in which his casino host is interviewed says he stopped coming to Ceasers once they took out his favorite machines.
