@richardgrant @gbhnews I started with Toot! which was OK, then tried Ivory which was (at the time) better and that's where I've stayed.
It's neat that the ecosystem supports multiple clients, though, so folks with more specific needs, reasons for economy, or tolerance for trying lots of options can have their choices too.
@gbhnews This would make for a good poll!
I’m partial to Ivory, but some other favorites are Mona, Mammoth, and Ice Cubes.
As many of you know, the third party iPhone/iPad app Metatext is no longer being maintained as the lead developer had health issues. However, there is now a community-maintained version of the app called Feditext. You can follow the latest news about it at: ➡️ @[email protected] It's not yet in the Apple app store, but it is currently being tested through Test Flight. Techy people can see the source code of the project at https://github.com/feditext/feditext #MetaText #FediText #Mastodon #FediTips #Fediverse
@gbhnews I am using and liking @MonaApp
Features that I appreciate I haven't found elsewhere are timeline position sync across devices (it runs on my iPhone, iPad, and M1 mac equally well) and the fact you can adjust and fiddle with a lot of config options.
I have a few requests like how its #muting works only in the app itself (i.e, #MonaApp muting isn't aligned with the web app muting), which is nonsensical to me.
I'd also like to see more sorting options everywhere. Like sorting of those I follow. Sorting of my followed hashtags, etc. In addition to sorting those types of lists, the ability to search them would also be appreciated.
@amart @gbhnews I tried a bunch of clients a while back. I will have to give #IceCubesApp another whirl.
I like the idea of #IvoryApp and know/agree it's a great app, but even for someone who has no problem paying for good software, the price is steep!
I like the @MonaApp pricing model. Plenty of options depending on what your needs are and they're one time purchases rather than subs.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Ok I’ve been trying the free trial of Mona. At first glance, it seems to be EXACTLY what I want. The “Load from remote server” option is my personal highlight. I don’t need to open a browser to see the full conversation! Plus it just feels extremely polished and snappy. So much functionality yet it doesn’t feel cluttered at all. If the Mac app is as good, this is a clear winner.
My top 3 right now are:
1. Tusker: great overall experience, but lacks the ability to see a post has replies to it. I feel that hampers community discussion—but this app has great QoL features.
2. Ice Cubes: my daily app, customizable but has some UI bugs.
3. Toot!: excellent threading implementation, but could use more customization options. I always go back and forth on whether I like how strongly it commits to its theme.
So much functionality and I get to browse and interact with other local timelines with just one Mastodon account!@gbhnews @TexasObserver #Mona — very customizable and allows us to do things like QTs (which are not official yet, stupidly).
#Ivory is prettier but they’re not updating very fast. I know it’s a small team! But it’s frustrating it still doesn’t have stuff Mona has had for months.
