hey #fediverse

in your opinion, what's the best iPhone Mastodon app?

@gbhnews I've been using Mona more recently but still have Ivory installed.
@gbhnews I use Ivory and am quite happy with it.
@wordshaper @gbhnews Also, Mona and Ice Cubes are not to be scorned (and more economical if that’s an issue)

@richardgrant @gbhnews I started with Toot! which was OK, then tried Ivory which was (at the time) better and that's where I've stayed.

It's neat that the ecosystem supports multiple clients, though, so folks with more specific needs, reasons for economy, or tolerance for trying lots of options can have their choices too.

@gbhnews This would make for a good poll!

I’m partial to Ivory, but some other favorites are Mona, Mammoth, and Ice Cubes.

@jsit I know so little I can't even create poll choices! Maybe after all the #fedifriends educate me a bit more...
@gbhnews here are some popular ones:
Ivory
Icecubes
Mona

As many of you know, the third party iPhone/iPad app Metatext is no longer being maintained as the lead developer had health issues. However, there is now a community-maintained version of the app called Feditext. You can follow the latest news about it at: ➡️ @[email protected] It's not yet in the Apple app store, but it is currently being tested through Test Flight. Techy people can see the source code of the project at https://github.com/feditext/feditext #MetaText #FediText #Mastodon #FediTips #Fediverse

@jsit @gbhnews I happily still use Metatext but I have 7 others installed that I've tried. None are as good as Metatext :-)
@gbhnews @jsit oh, this is good news. I’ve been using Metatext all along (haven’t tried others) and I was worried about eventually having to evaluate others and migrate.
@flashesofpanic @gbhnews @jsit I'll throw a vote in for Metatext and it's upcoming sequel Feditext. Both just feel right to moi. Have tried a handful of others but all are a just a little not right, for me anyhow.
@gbhnews I was coming over from Tweetbot, so #Ivory made the switch easy.
@gbhnews I’m loving Ice Cubes.
@gbhnews Another vote for Ivory.
@gbhnews another vote for Ice Cubes

@gbhnews #ivory is the best “iOS app” but #IceCubes is more full-featured Mastodon app.

#Mona is a good fit in-between

@gbhnews I am using and liking @MonaApp

Features that I appreciate I haven't found elsewhere are timeline position sync across devices (it runs on my iPhone, iPad, and M1 mac equally well) and the fact you can adjust and fiddle with a lot of config options.

I have a few requests like how its #muting works only in the app itself (i.e, #MonaApp muting isn't aligned with the web app muting), which is nonsensical to me.

I'd also like to see more sorting options everywhere. Like sorting of those I follow. Sorting of my followed hashtags, etc. In addition to sorting those types of lists, the ability to search them would also be appreciated.

@blhue @gbhnews Great summary of why I’ve used Mona since it was Beta. As others say icecubes is good too

@amart @gbhnews I tried a bunch of clients a while back. I will have to give #IceCubesApp another whirl.

I like the idea of #IvoryApp and know/agree it's a great app, but even for someone who has no problem paying for good software, the price is steep!

I like the @MonaApp pricing model. Plenty of options depending on what your needs are and they're one time purchases rather than subs.

@gbhnews Likely Ivory, for FOSS apps try icecubes

@gbhnews Asked that a bit ago, ended up falling in love with @MonaApp

@[email protected] @[email protected] Ok I’ve been trying the free trial of Mona. At first glance, it seems to be EXACTLY what I want. The “Load from remote server” option is my personal highlight. I don’t need to open a browser to see the full conversation! Plus it just feels extremely polished and snappy. So much functionality yet it doesn’t feel cluttered at all. If the Mac app is as good, this is a clear winner.

@gbhnews It’s Ivory. Accept no substitutes.
@gbhnews Mona has become my go-to despite some rough edges - for the absolute best experience, its still gotta be Ivory!
@gbhnews Ivory is great but requires a subscription. I don't need more recurring expenses in my life so I use Ice Cubes, which is very good.
@gbhnews I’ve used and paid for a few. @woollyapp is my favorite. Balance of polish and features.
@gbhnews I have tried a few, but mostly use Toot

@gbhnews

My top 3 right now are:

1. Tusker: great overall experience, but lacks the ability to see a post has replies to it. I feel that hampers community discussion—but this app has great QoL features.

2. Ice Cubes: my daily app, customizable but has some UI bugs.

3. Toot!: excellent threading implementation, but could use more customization options. I always go back and forth on whether I like how strongly it commits to its theme.

@gbhnews A bit more on Ice Cubes: this app has a lot of nice features that make it my daily app. Not only is it very customizable, it has AI integration to do things like help shorten long posts or add hashtags. Nice, clean interface. I imagine the UI bugs will get worked out soon enough.
@gbhnews My favorite is @tootapp It’s full of whimsy (and features)
@gbhnews The best app is @SubwayTooter !  So much functionality and I get to browse and interact with other local timelines with just one Mastodon account!
@gbhnews I've been using #IceCubes more, as it has a much richer range of functionality, but I still have #Ivory installed
@gbhnews I have tried Ivory, Ice Cubes and Mona in addition to the official app. Any of the first 3 are great choices but I am currently using Mona on both my iPhone and iPad. I prefer Ice Cubes and Mona in part because they also allow me to browse other instances' local feeds. Ivory did not have that feature yet when I tried it out.
@StanWonn that's an interesting feature!
@gbhnews Yes, I like it because some of my interests are more specialized so I can view other instances that are tailored to those interests without having to join them. it's also a great way to find other interesting folks to follow.
@gbhnews I like Mona better than Ivory, and it’s cheaper
@Archergal @gbhnews I'm giving Mona a try and it is really good
@charles222a203 I particularly like that it doesn't throw you to a Google translate page when you click on the "translate" icon. And it's really easy to real alt text on images.
@Archergal Yeah how it specifies something is a repost is cool, and I really love the dual-pane layout
@gbhnews Ice Cubes. Very easy to use and it sort of does quote posts.
@gbhnews Gotta be my girl Mona

@gbhnews @TexasObserver #Mona — very customizable and allows us to do things like QTs (which are not official yet, stupidly).

#Ivory is prettier but they’re not updating very fast. I know it’s a small team! But it’s frustrating it still doesn’t have stuff Mona has had for months.

@gbhnews I like Mastoot a lot.
@gbhnews Ivory - much like looking forward to a new movie or book from your favorite creator, Ivory is from a long-time iOS dev team (2007), @tapbots. Choosing them means you get devs with a lot of with experience and a stable app with long-term updates, but they still have the flexibility of a small team making a very carefully crafted App.
