@perigee @DeanObeidallah I tried for 30 years to get my fringe-right parents to see reason. It never worked. And the reason it never worked is because this is religion, not rationality. You can't reason with someone who doesn't even acknowledge objective reality, and instead actually fights it.
I'm not saying this is mental illness, but it is cult brainwashing, and that requires professionnal deprogramming.
We can't do the job when there's a massive multi-billion dollar machine feeding into making people into bigoted, cruel assholes. Confronting them does nothing but reinforce what the right-wing system is telling them. I agree with suing, but they control much of the courts... but you can't be sued for being a lying, racist asshole.
@Mxhrad @perigee @DeanObeidallah
you can disassociate yourselves from them though and refuse to deal with them at all. If everyone did that this would stop.
@darwinwoodka @perigee @DeanObeidallah
Exactly. Ostracize them. Remove them from society. That would be great, but when a major political party and a massive media system encourages them, they aren't going to be removed from society. It won't happen when we have large corporations like Target giving into bigots whining. It won't happen when the media both sides everything.
@Mxhrad @darwinwoodka @perigee @DeanObeidallah
One of the way that ostracization is supposed to work is that the ostracized feels loss from it and then identifies they need to let go of their shit to belong again. So to your point that the entire ecosystem wont do it, and my thrust that its gonna be peer to peer at best given Media is an intrigue generator and Capitalist Enterpise is...well...Capitalist...and the Electoral opposition is slothful and avoidant in admitting the black eyes and bruises on the legitimacy of The State, peer ostracization is not gonna silver bullet it.
Especially as social tethers between those who believe in and wanna be part of ground level Fascism solidify and calcify around themselves, and think themselves better off without you, as peer.
Ive always rejected the idea that you can willfully ignore bad things out of existence, even moreso now that its obvious shitbirds will find one another and move together.
It aint pleasant and it aint safe but imposing real costs and tolls that arent about peer relationship, on necrotic belief is a kind of ostracization if you squint.
@ciggysmokebringer @darwinwoodka @perigee @DeanObeidallah
Yeah, putting continuous pressure on organizations not to fund or hire far right bigots would be one way to go. The important part is "continuous," since these a-holes will go right back to funding extremists if they think we're not paying attention anymore.
absolutely.
@DeanObeidallah it's not a function of intelligence, but rather that of maintaining a position within their social circle (though initially just online) and they would have to accept social banishment/social death if they acknowledge that they were lied to and hoodwinked. Most people would would give up their own lives than lose their social status. Charlie Veitch was a 9/11 truther and converted to acknowledge that it wasn't an inside job, now gets death threats.

Once one of Britain’s principal conspiracy theorists as well as friend to David Icke and Alex Jones, Charlie Veitch, was known as a 9/11 “truther.” As soon as he realized that he had been duped, he stopped. But that was when his problems really began. According to an interview Veitch gave to the Telegraph, Veitch, […]
@DeanObeidallah and it's hardly the first time..
Every time they do it they dig in deeper and anytime they would consider moving away would be admitting their treacherous, selfish, shortsighted apathy.
I posted this after Helsinki
That's a perfect cult.
I think it's more accurate to say that they've chosen their feel--good self-delusion over the reality of the USA, and Trump happens to be the iconic figurehead of it. Until they found their delusion that grants them comfort or validation, they were silently miserable in the closet.
They are nevertheless dumb and gullible, however, because they mis-aim all their hatred at "liberals" instead of the true cause of all their ills: the One Percent and corporate boardrooms.
One coup that he got away with
Exactly, hence the popularity of the "if you aren't a right wing bigot like us and you come to our town, we're going to kill you" song.
Respectfully, there’s a hole in your logic:
Dumb and evil are not mutually exclusive.
#Trump supporters have neither brains nor a moral compass.
And the fact that other people do is beyond their comprehension.
@DeanObeidallah
You could be right. Not a lot of thinking going on with that crowd methinks.
No one, I say no one, benefits from having an erratic buffoon in the WH.
Have you had many conversations with MAGA voters?
no surprise considering how many chose Trump over their friends and family
@DeanObeidallah
Yep.
MAGAts are traitors. Any political analysis has to begin with this fact.
