Months after @tagesschau and @ZDF from Germany, yet still one of the earlier public broadcaster here on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse: The #BBC has arrived.

Also with their own instance, just as pioneered by @heiseonline 😉

It's an experiment for six months and their first accounts are:
@BBCRD
@BBC5Live
@BBCRadio4
@BBCTaster
@Connected_Studio
@BBC_News_Labs

Let's welcome them!

The BBC on Mastodon: experimenting with distributed and decentralised social media

Trialling ActivityPub and the federated model for social media and it's possibilities for the BBC.

BBC R&D
@mho @BBCRD Going to be interesting/useful if/when #Threads turns on #ActivityPub support, as these media organisations will effectively have 100M potential new followers, yet be independent of #Meta.
@mho @tagesschau @ZDF @heiseonline lots of credit to the Germans on this one. Maybe the German origins of #Mastodon helped, but those organisations were the true pioneers. But a big hand to the @BBCRD team for being one of the early innovators. Can have massive repercussions if done well (and, well, could have big negative implications too :)).
@Setok
-->..team for being one of the early innovators.<--

sorry, but the Fediverse is over 13 years old
🥴

@mho @tagesschau @ZDF @heiseonline @BBCRD
@crossgolf_rebel @heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD in terms of major news organisations, or major any organisations, they are still early innovators. And to be honest, much sooner wouldn’t have made much sense. It was only a year ago that Mastodon started to make real inroads due to Twitter mess. But sure, it would’ve been good if they had internally tracked sooner. But maybe they did.
@Setok OK, I'll go along with the organisations, but not with the other one.
The
#Fediverse and its more than 100 services and accesses don't have to "assert themselves" against anything. And Mastodon is just a media-hyped access, which is not even the best of all. The hype is only because the media need something to write about and where they have a "boss" to report on. That alone is where "the media" have not understood the fediverse.
We have been here for 13-14 years and you just haven't noticed us.

Because of its idea and its structure, the Fedivserse is more democratic than corporations with their closed platforms. For that reason alone, an earlier entry of such organisations would have been desirable a long time ago.

@heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD

@crossgolf_rebel @heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD Mastodon was the service the world needed at that point, due to Twitter. But this is good news for other Fediverse services as well. It’s useful to have a spearhead.

I was actually aware of Fediverse and some other distributed network attempts. Frankly they just weren’t interesting yet, as they lacked critical mass. A social network has to be social.

@Setok Mastodon is the only service that has been reported and then not even the best.

Why is there actually an attempt to equate the Fediverse with terms of closed services? Nothing has to prevail here and "critical mass" what is that and who defines it? It has also worked without these economic categories and has grown steadily for over a decade.

Again, the
#Fediverse doesn't have to catch on. With 14 years of existence, it already has for a long time.

@heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD

@crossgolf_rebel @heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD users define critical mass. If their friends or interesting people aren’t here, they don’t come.

You are measuring ‘better’ in terms of technology. But Mastodon has something that people wanted at that particular time. Don’t feel bitter, celebrate. It’s great for the Fediverse.

@Setok I already said that the Fediverse does not need critical mass because it does not compete with corporations. That's just what the media tells us.
We have peacefully coexisted and grown for 14 years.

I'm not frustrated, just annoyed by the focus on a single service in this collection of great services. Of which Mastodon alone has a boss that the media can interview. It is neither the best nor the oldest, but only the contact person makes the difference. Although you could also find people to talk to for the other services if you put more than 2 minutes of research into it.

@heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD
@crossgolf_rebel @heiseonline @mho @ZDF @tagesschau @BBCRD I disagree. Critical mass isn’t decided by corporations. It was people who came here first, not corporations. Not even media coverage. Once interesting people and friends appear, then it becomes appealing.
