I see people question @pixelfed over @Mastodon, and that's fine (I ❤️ Mastodon, sent from Mastodon)

However I think it's important to note that Pixelfed has Stories, Collections, Portfolios and much more!

You can post pics on Twitter, but Flickr, 500px and Instagram still thrive!

Use whatever best fits you, and know that @pixelfed + @Mastodon work great together ✨

I have
#pixelfed, #mastodon and #firefish #Kbin accounts... I'm still trying to figure out where it's best to put my picture content out, should I reblog myself or is that spammy etc!

Is it still going to be possible to post on pixelfed using my firefish account at some point?

Sometimes I think I should I post on Pixelfed then reblog via Firefish. I know there's no single 'correct' way to do it. Just speculating how to use my different accounts.
@dansup Hey, can I ask why Pixelfed doesn’t allow uploading video taken on iOS devices? According to google it works if you edit a line in the .env file and so it seems like a really weird omission from the default config.

@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon I've mostly approached it as 'Tools for the job'. I use Pixelfed for photos because it has the tools to organise, present, and deliver photos.

I use Mastodon for the 'shouting into the void', and retooting the photos on Pixelfed. (maybe I should use Mastodon for more, but I've always struggled with that side of social media).

I know that they work together, but I've not found a particular use-case, other than easy sharing, that works for me.

@dansup where can I read more on what Collections are?
Is it similar to what #GooglePlus called #Collections?
(I was sure I had made a post tagged with that to explain what #GPlus' Collections were, but now I can't find it...)
@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon I like the idea of Pixelfed, but for me the difference lies in what I use Mastodon and Instagram for. Mastodon is for having a community broadly centred on philosophy, while Instagram is for staying in touch with family and friends. Many academics use Mastodon, but no one from my private circles knows what Pixelfed is.

@dansup A couple of questions, if I may.

I imported all of my instagram photos to pixelfed (love it!) but I encountered two problems:
1. I can’t select any of those posts for my Portfolio. Is that intended, a limitation of the import nature or a bug?
2. All of the emojis and tildes (áéíóú) on photo descriptions are messed up, any way to solve/prevent this?

@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon Do stories posted on Pixelfed show up in mastodon ? If so how? Also is it possible to post stories from the iOS app ?
@dansup @pixelfed @[email protected] I dig the work you put into the fediverse and I for one welcome any additions to Pixelfed the more options the better imo

@dansup yes i have both because i like to separate my photo blogging from my textual blogging 👍
@dansup True, I plan on using Pixelfed for photo sharing. I've never been big on Instagram and never experienced stories but I'm happy I get to experience it. The hardest part will be getting friends to come over. It's the issue I have with Mastodon. So posting seems a tad weird to share if you have no one to share it with. But I guess it also goes to the main feed.

@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon my problem with pixelfied is that you can’t follow hashtags, only users, which makes it feel so small. I don’t know who to follow, and following a bunch of strangers seems counterintuitive.

so I don’t. and it feels very quiet and small, and it’s hard to find things I’m interested in.

@dansup Is there anything stopping us from having "Stories, Collections, Portfolios" on other AP servers as well, and just change the frontend to suit the different use cases?

This is not a "Mastodon vs PixelFed" question, but more of a "why can't we have one single ActivityPub identity and just use different frontends"?

@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon Unresponsive development in pixefed (see github issues) soured me on the platform. Mastodon is fine.

@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon Total #pixelfed noob question, how does post from pixelfed that are boosted on mastodon looks like? I guess to get the most of both world this is one should be organised.

Two accounts so that more photos can be posted on pixelfed and only relevant ones will be boosted on mastodon.

Ideally if you could trigger reboost in some way from pixelfed that would be cool but not mandatory.

@marhoff @dansup @pixelfed Yeah, a number of people do that (having a pixelfed account and boosting on mastodon some of their own stuff), the post will look just like another mastodon one, you may check my account here to see for yourself how it looks. (Tbh for posts with multiple photos I even like the view on mastodon more lol)

@brianch @dansup @pixelfed Thanks! Also I notice character limit of pixelfed apply when doing so.

Never thought of that bit. I guess ultimately fediverse compatible blog could become a thing. Share across fediverse and click on the link to view full size blog. For those who go on the blog directly they could be totally unaware of fediverse integration.

Maybe it already exist I should look for it. This is so much powerful than previous social network propositions!

@marhoff @dansup @pixelfed It already exists :) I don't know much about the fediverse blogging platforms though, but look at @yubal for example, you can view it and follow like a regular mastodon account, but if you go to the tree dots on the profile and "open original page" you'll see it's actually a blog. (the platform itself, "writefreely", is open source, but the hosting is paid)

Sorry for the random ping yubal, but I thought it was worth it to demonstrate these cool fediverse things 😅

@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon are there any hosts? My developer chops are rusty, and if I can't subscribe to a host for it's care and feeding, as much as I'd like to, I wouldn't be able to use it.
@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon what I meant to say was self-hosting sites.
@dansup @pixelfed @Mastodon I did set up an account there but haven't used it yet. Was / is difficult to figure out best use.
