So #MacOS folks, do I need antivirus or malware detection and if so, which one? My new Air is so sweet and fast, I want to cherish it.
@avirr Not really. It’s a pretty uncommon target for malware because of the install base, sandboxing, and permissions, so as long as you’re smart about what you download and give permissions to, you’ll be fine. If you do want one, CleanMyMacX is the go-to, which is worth having anyway to clean up messy apps that store files in weird places instead of the proper .app
@avirr How many of these published vulnerabilities, if exploited on your computer, would cost you in lost time, money, ability to work, or peace of mind? Anti-malware works like an insurance policy, it offsets some of the potential for loss. Comparative statistics with Windows vulnerabilities don't do a damn bit of good when you become a victim. I also know people who don't lock their front door to their house because, well, the odds are so low.

@VisualStuart Yep, we don’t have security by obscurity any more. What anti-malware software do you suggest?

@avirr I am more on the security side than the consumer side of the house. I'd suggest reviews in the industry like this one, by parties who aren't trying to sell you something.

@avirr @VisualStuart tagging along, since I am also looking for anti-malware software. I used „Panda Virus“ for a while, since it offered a multi-platform license, but I didn‘t like the subscription fee. I prefer buying software.

@avirr As long as you're smart, and Apple is very smart, and bad guys like nation states and organized crime aren't very smart, and things like this arbitrary code execution vulnerability from two days ago don't exist, then you really have nothing to worry about.

@avirr I usually don't run any AV or malware software but then again, I don't do much on my Mac except for video editing and social media. What air model do you have? the new m2s?
@avirr No matter what you do about anti-malware software be sure to keep #MacOS up to date. Every update fixes security issues. We use Jampf Protect and it hasn’t slowed down our Macs, but it is for businesses and not individual sales.
