Infosec Exchange

A Mastodon instance for info/cyber security-minded people.

Mastodon hosted on infosec.exchange

@jerry I went for noc.social, as my background is in networking.

Maybes I should move to be with the cool kids on infosec.exchange :)

@gordsec @jerry Cooler cool kids are on infosec.town.
@pauliehedron @jerry @gordsec Turns out I have created an account on infosec.exchange after all :)
@jerry Is approval necessary to use relay.infosec.exchange? I'd love to get more content from the infosec family fed into my small personal instance.

@jerry Wow I wish I knew that we have our own pixelfed instance. Is there any way to migrate?

Plus, peertube instance is also a surprise for me, few days back I was looking for some peertube instances where I could upload my HTB walkthroughs (trying to evade YouTube) btw here's my channel:https://www.youtube.com/@cybersoldierhtb
Can I upload these to peertube? What's the storage limit on peertube? Can I use my mastodon credentials with it or do I need to sign up separately?

Cyber Soldier

There's sufficient cyber security content available in English which isn't the case with Urdu so I am here to make Hack The Box walkthroughs in Urdu.

YouTube
@cybersoldier it’s a separate login and storage is super cheap. I thin. The default is 1GB, but that’s arbitrary.
@jerry for anything above than 1GB, will I be required to pay?
@jerry Thrilled to learn you have an #elk interface. Thanks!

@jerry

Is there a delay in accounts being verified? I signed up for https://infosec.pub/login and setup a login.

I still can't login even though I verified my email address.

Login - Infosec.Pub

@mvilain there shouldn’t be - lemmy has had some issues that require some database level tweaks to fix failed registration attempts
@jerry Still can't login. I don't get a "I forgot my password" email either. Is there a way to scrub the database of my account creation so I can start over?
@mvilain sorry - been in meetings. Let me get your account fixed.
@mvilain it wasn't the problem I thought it was - your account is fully active. I saw an email delivered to you earlier today, and I just initiated another password reset request, which I also see your mailserver picking up and accepting.
@mvilain which I suspect means it's hiding in a spam folder

@jerry The password reset email came through and my account is now active. Thanks.

When I was doing IT and someone asked "What happened?", I pull out my Standard Answerβ„’:

There was shpilkis in the geneckicazoik.

@mvilain yes. usually I say that I'm running low on router fluid.
@jerry That's the networking people. I stick to the servers and storage. They still complain.
@jerry πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ†
@jerry
@danherb10 you may find this useful
@jerry damn, that’s a lot of services

@jerry risky.af is such a cool domain name!

@jerry nice! you guys have your own little ecosystem here

>> YOU'VE GOT MAIL <<

sorry

@jerry risky.af should be a porn sitΓ·
@ChickenPwny @jerry jist to piss of the Afghan government who's ccTLD is being used?
@kkarhan @jerry lol that's awesome

@ChickenPwny @jerry before some japanese hedgefund took over .so I had some fun domains there...

Then they upped registration fees so hard, not even I could afford it anymore.

@jerry do you have a breakdown of your approximate expenses and hosting arrangements? This looks like at least half a rack of gear in a colocation data centre somewhere. Do you recoup costs?
Asking as someone who would like to host my own one day.
@cooopsspace @jerry If you're looking to host a single user instance, consider Oracle Cloud's Free Tier.

Gives you:
- 4 ARM vCPU cores
- 24 GB of RAM
- 200GB storage
- 10 TB egress bandwidth

All the above for free.

https://www.oracle.com/cloud/free
@deltatux already had a run in with that lot, I wouldn't use them for anything in production. They denied my free tier account without cause or explanation. Scummy company (that's well known), and it needs to be understood that free tier can disappear at literally any moment with no warning.
I'd rather pay Vultr than use Oracle.
@cooopsspace oh that sucks, to get around losing free tier, you can upgrade to "paid tier" but keep within the free tier limits, which is what I did when they warned that my free tier would evaporate.

Oh nice, how's Vultr? Heard some great things about them. Though their pricing seems higher than Hetzner, esp. now that Hetzner has some ARM instances that can be had for pretty cheap.

@deltatux Vultr are great, doesn't seem over provisioned at all. Means you get to use the resources you pay for.

Vultr also give you OIDC support so if you have an OIDC provider you can just use that. That's an A tier feature right there.

Their web interface is fast for me as an Australian unlike OVH that's sooo slow (single region in what I assume is France).

You've really got to watch the low cost providers because I've seen a few awful ones.

@cooopsspace Oh that's very good. Ya Hetzner isn't too bad, the infosec.exchange infrastructure is hosted there & performance seems pretty good.

I agree with the low cost providers, been using some from
#LowEndTalk and well, you get what you paid for, a lot of them are oversubscribed & only good for non-production stuff lol.
@jerry So much work. Thank you for setting all of these up (and keeping them running) so that people can find nice places on the Fediverse.
@jerry at number 6 you had forgot to add that #Matrix is like #Discord ...
@jerry I just wanted to say, thanks for posting this. I learned about new services today. Goodbye reddit :)
@jerry for a second I thought you stood up a ELK (Elastic/Logstash/Kibana) instance for us πŸ˜…πŸ˜…
@jerry dad, can we get a KylesKorner.infosec for all the Kyle professionals only?
@jerry Is the IaC available to learn from?
@jerry That's actually quite a super impressive collection. I was actually relaying with relay.infosec.exchange (with nep.one ) - did you take it down for traffic - or is it just overloaded ^^ it seems to be having issues today.
@link looks like the service died. working to restart it.
@link impressive - the server ran out of memory and killed the relay process. I just recently upgraded to a new version of the relay and betting there is a memory leak somewhere.
@link in any event, it's working again and I will be keeping an eye on it
@jerry Thank you very much for your work. But yes, that does sound like a memory leak. I hope it will be found.

Looking at all the instances you run - a true believer in the decentralised Fediverse! Great job!

@jerry is there a delay on new registrations for both lemmy and fedia? registered on both, got the activation email, activated my account. tried to login, both lemmy and fedia say my account is not active even though I activated both of them.

tried to reset my password on fedia and it just gave me a red message box saying "array".

@jerry okay apparently Lemmy worked, had to use my email to login for the first time.
@jerry mastadon noob here, def don't understood this post at all. what can i read to understand mastadon and how it works/is structured?
@jerry egads, do you have anyone else adminning things or is it just you crawling through configs and staying on top of that many dimensions of stacks and services
@morb I’ve had a few that phased in and out over the years, but me at the moment. I am trying to radically simplify the environment (going from 30+ servers down to about 5) so I can reasonably enlist help again.
@jerry small typo in the last one, an extra f in β€œinfofsec” for meet-ups.
@singe thank you for noticing that! Fixed it
@jerry is there a typo in number 14? Infofsec ?
