Keeping the introductions theme for #HamTalk, I’m curious to know:

Q2: What was your first #HamRadio?

#AmateurRadio

#HamTalk A2: My first #HamRadio was a handheld TYT that only did 2m (144-148 MHz). Had a blast sitting in my grandparents backyard pinging the repeater on the hill outside of town in the evenings and participating in the nets.
@ingalls A2 my first ham radio was an ICOM HT that was quad band. I forget the model number. My first mobile was a Kenwood TM-V7a
@ingalls A2 for #HamTalk - A Yeasu 857d. (Still have it, but now built into a go kit instead of installed in my vehicle)

Q2: What was your first #HamRadio?

A2: I borrowed a couple of HTs to get started, then set up Echolink on my phone. First radio I bought circa 2013 or so was a BaoFeng UV-5R + a programming cable which I used to set it up with CHIRP. .

First shortwave radio much earlier, a mid-1980s Sony ICF-2010 for listening to R Havana Cuba, BBC, Deutsche Welle, and the odd numbers station.

@w8emv @ingalls Mine was a Yaesu FT-50RD H-t. It was pretty costly for a poor college student in the late 90's, and long before affordable radios like the Chinese H-t's found today.
@w8emv @ingalls I scavenged some tubes, capacitors etc from old TVs and radios and built stuff. But as time went on, I found that a cheap Lafayette xmitter and Hallicrafters rcvr. Was far superior. Now I have an Icom 7300 but seldom use it…

Bought a TH-D74 immediately after passing my license. Used every feature on that radio and it got me into satellites.

First (and currently only) HF rig is a Xiegu G90. Been having lots of fun with a janky coil-loaded whip from my balcony, playing with all kinds of modes, contesting, learning CW, etc. Love that radio!

@ingalls A2: Baofeng UV-5R. Has held up pretty well all things told, and now it's the radio I'm not too worried about during bike rides
