I wrote a blog post about why the long-term loss of what Twitter used to be sucks, if you want to see a more business-side perspective on its decline, and why social media is crucial for small creators in general.

That said, I'm immensely glad the site is burning to the ground. That place hasn't been okay for ages, and it's unlikely to recover.

Losing Twitter Sucks — Wanderbots

The decline of Twitter, and to a lesser degree Reddit, has been a weird tragedy to watch unfold over the last few months. Technically it’s been happening for years, with countless controversies and issues that always made the future of social media look just a bit worse. The most recent issues, howe

H/t @Wanderbot for this great image…

“ 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN X-PARROT!!”.

@Wanderbot Good to see you here, Wanderbot, even if it's given the circumstances you've wrote about. 🙇 Thank you for the read. It really helps reflect on the decaying state of the web these last few years.

Even with all of the uncertainty in platforms right now, I really hope that indie devs can get a proper feel for what platforms they should be focusing on for marketing going forward. The environment on Twitter's remains makes it so we're even barely posting on our studio account anymore atm.

@Wanderbot Yeah, this feels so right...

It feels like a lot of of the value of social media is unlocked when there's one place that "everyone" is. Which means that "indie" sites that don't growth-hack never get there. But the same stuff the companies need to do to try to get to be the "one place everyone goes" naturally makes that place turn to shit, because it means optimizing for engagement and stickiness above all else (and aggressively monetizing.)

@Wanderbot Best of luck figuring it out. I'm not a creator at all, I just read and boost things, my approach has just been to sign up for half a dozen different sites and see what interesting stuff there is in different places, but that's a heck of a lot easier when I'm just looking for a few people to follow to kill time on the internet and am not counting on a following to make a living.
@Wanderbot I’m really happy to see you on Mastodon. I hope things work out for you here. I don’t use most social networks anymore, so getting updates from you here is amazing!
@Noyesster I've been kinda lurky since signing up since YouTube will always be my primary focus, but I'll start posting here more when I can!
@Wanderbot is it just me, or does the upsidedown Twitter logo look like Sonic?
@antimnguyen I see it too. It's uncanny.

@Wanderbot

Your article expressed my own frustrations, being dependent on social media for over 15 years to share my ideas about helping kids in high poverty areas of Chicago and other places.

I'll stay on the Bird site for as long as I can since so many of my network are still there. But have launched here also. Not Threads until it is PC based & I don't give free access to my phone.

Keep us posted of new camping grounds.
