It’s been so fun chatting with everyone on Mastodon; I plan on sticking around here for a long time. However, for my longer form, rich content, I like Post – where we can continue to build a community that actually cares about each other. I’m really looking forward to seeing you all over there as well. @georgetakei that link gives me a "Profile Not Found' error.

@georgetakei just tried it again and I'm still getting 'profile not found'. Is it known to be working for other users?

@georgetakei

This is a Silicon Valley billionaire funded project, so, not a chance.

@maria @georgetakei Also a Terms of Use to rival iTunes. Minor win: governed by the state of New York and not Florida or Texas. Small victories.
@maria @georgetakei just look at it
@gmate8 @maria @georgetakei Oof. No thanks. Just make a #lemmy or #kbin if you want a community.
@PDXDemSocialist @maria @georgetakei he said longer form. I'd suggest writefreely or even maybe Discourse.

@georgetakei Hi, that link is broken - you have "/@/georgehtakei" when it should be "/@georgehtakei"?

edit: actually, it's suddenly working for me now. Weird. Sorry!

Also - there do exist other mastodon servers that allow long-form posts. Migration is a bit of a pain, though - in particular your post history does not (currently) get moved.

@rbos If effort must be taken, it's a good warning sign to look closer.

Bonus points for forcing people to look closer.

@georgetakei FYI, there are variants of Mastodon permitting longer-form content, e.g. kbin. Which would then continue to let your followers on a short-message variant follow you and see your content.

A corporate-controlled walled garden ain't it.

To further elaborate with slightly more stress:

"where we can continue to build a community" β€” fragmenting your community isn't building it.

@georgetakei

When I click that link it says "profile not found"

@georgetakei no thanks, #post is just another billionaire’s pet project.
@georgetakei
It's been nice, George, but I escaped from an algorithm-driven techbro hell. No way am I going to give my time and content to another one.
@georgetakei there are mastodon servers which support long form rich text posting. You could petition the universeodon admins for the features you would like to have

@georgetakei
This site doesn't seem to be federated and vulnerable to yet another example of #enshittification

Being centralized and having unknown investment interests it risks falling into the same trap as other centralized social media.

The future of social media should be federated and public service focused without profit interests looming around the corner to ruin it at any time.
#Fediverse #mastodon #post
https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/28/post-news-twitter-alternative-a16z/

TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

@georgetakei

After everything we learned from Twitter and Reddit's failures, why on Earth would we trust some other rich tech bro with the next site? Federation is the future. Anything less is just another money grubbing capitalist.

As for post length, you can post to Mastodon from a Firefish instance and completely subvert the character limit if you like.
@georgetakei
Not going there. You will be missed here. Good luck.
@Skepticat @georgetakei gotdangit--there are too many damn platforms. For some reason I thought post.news *was* mastodon, but I think I've confused it with journa.host.
@georgetakei Why? There are mastodon instances that allow longer posts as well. Or alternatives made for blogging like https://joinplu.me or https://writefreely.org all free and connected with mastodon as well as the whole fediverse. If you decide to use a fediverse-connected service, we could follow you there with our existing accounts. Please consider using one of these and not asking your followers to sell their souls to the next cyber-oligarch… Thanks!
Plume

@georgetakei leave this place for yet another techbro billionaire's wasteland? no thanks
@georgetakei What convinced you to go to Post? I've not been there in a while, but I found the performance kind of hit or miss...
@georgetakei Why are you using a site that requires me to create an accountβ€”free or notβ€”just to read your post? Not happening.

@georgetakei

Nope. I'm done with the oligarchs.
I just can't do another "Billionaires" attempt at social media.

Also, I'm not going to allow and let them get richer and exploit my data, as stated in their TOS. Nope. Not a chance.

@georgetakei With your name and political standing, you could kick social media into the 23rd century.

Please consider asking the owner of "Post" to implement ActivityPub. I would happily follow you then. The other option is to change to a service, that already implements this and allows you to write long articles.

Please, don't feel pressured. I like your writings independent of your technical choices.

@georgetakei No thank you, George, but best of luck.

@georgetakei Nah…

Good luck tho in your endeavors.

@georgetakei Big nope. Post is awful.

@georgetakei

I wish you good luck and success on Post.

For my part, I will keep following you here on Mastodon, I would rather not support platforms owned by techbros.

"Plus Γ§a change, plus c'est la mΓͺme chose"

It's time to break the cycle.

@georgetakei The caring community youβ€˜re talking about already exists btw. Right here. It’s called the fediverse!
@georgetakei. I’m a big fan, but won’t be doing any more corporate social media platforms. I’m so glad you are on the Fediverse!
@georgetakei I’m on Post but I really hate it.
@georgetakei I prefer Mastodon and threads.
@georgetakei I'm sorry to see you go, George. But before you give up on the fediverse in general, maybe you should try one of the other software products that you could use, such as @firefish. The fediverse isn't just Mastodon.

@georgetakei

Post backed by a16z? Who backed Elon's takeover of Twitter?

I dunno George...... I like not being the product...

@georgetakei
Looks cool.

Where can I find out more?

Who runs the site? How can I access it? (i.e. is there one official app only?) Is it open source? Do you have complete control over your own data? etc. etc.

When I go to the site all I get is a login prompt.

@georgetakei I wish you all the success on Post but there's no way I'll be heading there.

The strongest reason to use Mastodon is political - it's run by the people for the people on code that is free - as in freedom - and it's a critical plank in the resistance to the corporate take over and monetisation of our means of communication.

If you ran a blog I'd follow you there - you could even invite people to donate to support your work if that's required.

@georgetakei I believe #writefreely can do longer form stuff and still federates to mastodon
@georgetakei
We love You George.. We are the real fighters here. Live long..
@georgetakei Your recommendation might be in conflict with the Prime Directive.

@georgetakei I'm really glad to hear that you'll be sticking around here. You're the reason I first came to Mastodon & to this server in particular.

I will always be a fan of yours! #LLAP πŸ–– ❀️ ✨

@georgetakei Please consider joining Spoutible. It’s growing by leaps and bounds. I’d love to follow you there.

@georgetakei I hope you reconsider.

Longer posts are possible on some instances, and some Mastodon compatible alternatives like calckey/firefish even let you import your toots

@georgetakei After multiple bad experiences (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter) I am avoiding corporate social media like the plague.
@georgetakei Of course, avoiding something β€œlike the plague” has lost a fair bit of meaning lately.
@georgetakei Ty for pointing that out to me. Just followed.

@georgetakei
If it's not decentralised, it will die.

Good luck in your temporary elite club. Where you turn your back on people if they don't want to join.

And see you back here later.
