Infant deaths surge in Texas after abortion ban

The increase in deaths reverses a nearly 10-year decline.

Ars Technica
@arstechnica Wow, who could have seen this coming other than everyone who said this would happen because it’s so obvious it would happen?
@arstechnica
These are actual children though. If I understand the party that enacted this law, the actual children matter less than the fetus, so this is not only fine by their standards, but it's the expected outcome.
@snoopfrog not to mention the harm done to the mothers. two birds with one stone. truly efficient cruelty.
@arstechnica

It feels weird asking someone to provide
#AltText4Me when you're a for-profit corporation but accessibility is important even if you are unwilling to pay for it.

@arstechnica Conservatives worship stochastic human sacrifice.

It’s their Eucharist.

@arstechnica
Is anyone surprised? The death and cruelty is the point.
#Abortion
@arstechnica Clearly the Republican answer is to stop reporting the deaths.
@arstechnica This is the future the right wing wants.
@arstechnica Texas, The Dead Baby state. Not the tag line I would have picked but they seem to like it.

The governor’s ‘strike force’ is composed of some of the most powerful moguls in the Lone Star State. In a time of pandemic, critics say it’s reckless pay-to-play politics.

Just like the "war on drugs" was used to disenfranchise POC voters, the Texas war on reproductive care is an attack on women voters.

Felony disenfranchisement motivates anti-abortion laws.

Insider
@Npars01 @arstechnica missing here are Peter Thiel and Elon Musk. Thiel is one of the biggest GOP donors. Musk moved Tesla to Texas because of and not in spite of Abbot. Thiel has expressed in the past women should have not been given the right to vote. Musk is a fan of white replacement theory and notorious to pay women to carry to term his seed.
@arstechnica They're OK with a non-viable fetus dying shortly after birth, or with someone dying or suffering irreversible trauma from being forced to continue a failed pregnancy. That's "God's will" to them. Aborting once the non-viability is known, thus sparing the fetus and parents the nightmare of carrying to term, is supposedly offensive to God and thus must be banned.
@arstechnica what an unpredictable outcome 🙄
@arstechnica I heard that the testimonies given had everyone in tears. I feel for them so much.

@arstechnica Tragic and my heart breaks for these families. I place the blame on the #GOP and the fake "christians".

Life is not perfect no matter how hard you wish.

@arstechnica Conservatives would argue that these numbers are wrong because they don't include the number of abortions in the infant mortality rate.

@arstechnica

And:

“In 2020, the maternal mortality rate overall in the US was 24 deaths per 100,000 live births […] But for Black Americans, the rate is far higher—a staggering 55 per 100,000. Across the border in Canada, the rate is 8 per 100,000”

That’s nearly *500 avoidable maternal deaths every single year, most of them black women, and the numbers will only get worse.

*edit because of embarrassing order of magnitude error

@arstechnica Ah, shoot…that’s not good!
@arstechnica infant death from all causes up 11%, from genetic and birth defects up 21% smh
@arstechnica after life expectancy the second major statistical marker for measuring status of development reversing in the US that I'm aware of.
@arstechnica Republicans are totally cool with death as long as it comes after birth. Life is only sacred to them pre-birth
@samabuelsamid @arstechnica The cruelty (and controlling women) is the point.
@arstechnica it’s almost as if ignorant white people who know little about medicine and less about how things actually work, also don’t know how to legislate health. almost.
@arstechnica
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS A DEATH CULT
They really don't care who dies or who is harmed, as long as they achieve their agenda.
How many people have to die in their wars, from gun violence, from lack of universal healthcare, from climate change, from pollution, and now from this.
@arstechnica Soon followed up by an increase in mothers dying. I am so unshocked by this.
@arstechnica “pro-life”. Sure. This is horrifying.

@arstechnica @Iragersh

Texas kills babies.

Whether its the in-your-face overt racism of Abbott drowning them in the river, or the subtler Abbot letting them suffer an excruciating death shortly after birth.

Shame ever-lasting Texas legislature.

Those pearly gates are closed to you.

@arstechnica “Abortion bans and restrictions are known to increase infant deaths, maternal deaths, and maternal suffering. And the US already has the worst maternal and infant mortality rates of any other high-income country in the world.” #healthcare #equity

@arstechnica Haha Pro-life my ass!!

Sincerely,
- a Texan

@arstechnica here hoping the state will manage the graves for those babies, they were beautiful souls that deserves their own graves.

the future must remember them

@arstechnica Vote for Republicans, they’re pro-life.

@arstechnica there were over 55,000 abortions in Texas in 2020.
