#Landsat #Thermal view of Death Valley National Park. Just realized you fan use the thermal satellite sensors to determine where is likely to be the hottest part of the park, based on thermal signature from other days. (ie if you REALLY want to experience 131F, probably localized microcclimate) #CAwx #satellite #DeathValley #NationalPark
Here's Furnace Creek, Death Valley. The green area you see is the (ridiculous) Furnace Creek Ranch Golf Course, which for some reason, exists in the middle of a National Park. #DeathValleyNationalPark #FurnaceCreek #golf #satellite #mapping
@ai6yr what..!? FFS, just because you can does not mean you should.
@julescelt01 Apparently was 3 holes, expanding to nine holes in 1931... which is all historical, fine. But then they remodeled it recently with a golf pro and it's a luxury golf course owned by Xanterra now. https://www.si.com/golf/travel/feature-2020-05-04-death-valleys-furnace-creek-a-hot-but-cool-golf-bucket-list-play

@ai6yr interesting...

This pic is from Google maps and is dated 2015...the grass doesn't look to good.

@julescelt01 They did a full remodel in 2017 it looks like (installing a new irrigation system), probably because of that. https://www.oasisatdeathvalley.com/connect/stories/the-renaissance-of-the-worlds-lowest-golf-course-214-feet/
The Renaissance of the World’s Lowest Golf Course (-214 Feet) - The Oasis at Death Valley

Welcome to The Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley, an 18-hole course located in a true American oasis within the three million acres that is Death Valley National Park.

@ai6yr It's hard to make a more ridiculous golf course, but these people have.

@ai6yr
It is an OLD OLD golf course. Death Valley was first used for borax mining (and that area was used to grow alfalfa for the mule teams) and then a tourist resort long before it became a national park.

At this point the golf course is part of the ecology of the place: the creation was hugely disruptive but that was decades ago. Its the same reason why Wawona golf course is still in Yosemite.
