“‘Mastodon’ is a competitor to—“

Why do journalists always say this? This is some capitalist-brained mindset.

The only thing the Fediverse competes with is your sleep schedule.

@yassie_j "Mark Zuckerberg, a competitor to the Lizard that replaced president Trump..."
@MiaWinter @[email protected] lizards are cool and cute they would be improvement vs those 2 nyaaa
@yassie_j mastodon is a competitor to the fediverse
@yassie_j They compete for eyeballs. 👀They compete for people's time ⏰ They compete for people's attention.
@yassie_j and lunch time reading that is not Mastodon reading.
@yassie_j also the ability for me to focus on anything else cause y'all are so cute and gay
@yassie_j
Exactly❣️
They are so stuck in their “competitive mindsets”, that they cannot even imagine the concept of altruistic and cooperative “working together for love of a common goal to achieve something greater than anyone could on their own” anymore - which is kinda devastating and depressing me for years now…
😫😮‍💨😓
@yassie_j and my sleep loses big time...
@yassie_j Agreed. Mastadon is its own social media platform, not just a "Twitter alternative" or "Twitter clone"

@yassie_j
Mainstream will always say that social networks compete because it’s now ingrained that they are a form of entertainment where you’re mostly a passive consumer of an algorithm.

The social aspect is almost completely neglected and forgotten. Parasocial relationships are enough for most normal users.

@yassie_j American media can’t help but frame stories as rivalries if not battles. Think how often American journalists resort to the language of violence and war when talking business and politics: “on the firing line,” “fires back,” “attacks,” “declares war on,” “targets,” “takes aim on,” “to combat,” “soldiered on,” “battleground state,” etc etc etc. Everything is rivalry. Everything is competition, war. It’s the very core of American culture imho. Not surprising journos reflect that culture.
@brianstorms @yassie_j I’m old enough to remember when politics wasn’t covered like the Super Bowl .

@yassie_j Probably, or It's just me - to have something to write about. Seriously.

Clicks must add up.

@[email protected] I don't disagree but I also feel like "competes with" is often synonymous with "exists in a space with" -- it competes with twitter/threads/etc in the same way that free to play games compete against each other, even if they might not be in the same space but in terms of like, attention economy
@yassie_j
"The fediverse is a competitor to the idea that only large techbro companies can provide useful services."
@yassie_j I had seen this post many times before I decided to read the last part

So true lol
@LivingCooki that last part is for you, Livvy 💖
@yassie_j We have to admit the business model is unclear. The ROI on my personal instance is terrible so far, but I'm considering showing ads to myself to break even eventually.
@yassie_j Yes, it competes very strongly with my sleep schedule.
@yassie_j I think pretty much everyone who's on mastodon made an account specifically because they want something that isn't like twitter.
@yassie_j competition assumes my sleep schedule has a chance.
@yassie_j YOU KNOW WHO ELSE IS A COMPETITOR
@yassie_j MY MOM!!
@seeyouinrayman4 I am so impressed that you waited five days for this joke 😭
@yassie_j i didnt wait five days for that joke. i genuinely forgot lmao
@yassie_j Actually my timeline goes pretty quiet when I'm (supposed to be) asleep, since Mastodon doesn't feel the need to constantly inundate me with ads and other random garbage posts I never wanted to see in the first place.
@yassie_j it's like saying the red cross competes with a commercial cosmetic operations clinic

@yassie_j Hell, half the idea of the federation model is that different social media sites /don't/ have to compete with each other - otherwise the site with the most users is the most useful to new users, which rapidly leads to a monopoly!

You know, that thing that capitalists always say they hate

@yassie_j Careful. I tried out Threads and it sucked up an entire hour of my time and I wasn't even trying hard (and I knew I had to wake up in the morning)...

That said, people are hard at work trying to figure out how to monetize the Fediverse or at least glom onto it in a way that they think could be profitable. Think of it like early-day NPR, where the money was provided by charitable listeners - until Ronald Reagan decided that public radio could accept advertising disguised as corporate support. We're an audience of 13 million, and someone thinks they can sell a product to that audience...

@yassie_j @Em0nM4stodon yup this is more addicting than Tiktok
@yassie_j Everything is competition nowadays
@yassie_j Tbf we are competing... Just not for money. We want people to join not because it will get someone rich but because it's just better for people.

@yassie_j
Because most journalists don't have time to actually think about and understand the stuff they're writing about. Think about any news article you've read where you're a domain expert. Not sure about you, but I catch things wrong in my domain all the time. Now, extrapolate to domains where you can't judge. Are they somehow making fewer mistakes there? I doubt it.

I mean, I think you're also right. There's certainly a bias to see everything through capitalism's lens.

@yassie_j because it is a competitor even if it's not run by a single capitalistic entreprise
@yassie_j Can't compete with something that's already broken
@yassie_j they’re just mad because they can’t sell ads to us.
@yassie_j AND IT’S WINNING. (yawn)
@yassie_j with a few notable exceptions, journalists are some of the most near sighted, dumb-fucks of this current age. They seem to have an ignorance policy and far too many can't tell the difference between news and opinion.
@yassie_j swear to fuckin Jeebus thank you - I feel like this is so obvious but everyone keeps framing it as this zero sum bullshit when there are no investors and no profit angle.
@[email protected] Because journalists are also just trained people who never get as far as understanding the Fediverse and freedom. They are unfortunately far too much part of the hamster wheel
@yassie_j Well, there's a would outside the #mastodon bubble.😃
@yassie_j @onepict Mastodon competes with the pile of books I want to read. Ironically, mastodon also helps making the pile of books I want to read growing taller and taller.
@yassie_j Can’t blame them because there’s so much money jockeying for a share at turning your online actions into AI models there right now. 😃

@yassie_j
@lakelady

I really appreciate this point. Seeing a lot of posts on here about how to keep Mastodon relevant going forward or how "we must (de)federate to avoid getting swept away by Threads". But we're not *competing* against these other platforms by metrics, we're simply making the best social media site we can. I think that's important to keep in mind as we work through the valid concerns on both sides.

@yassie_j
Every single activity is a competitor for your time and attention (the most scarce resource.)
A forest path is a competitor to the Fediverse.
Some activities are more similar to each other, and the comparison becomes more pointed.
