“‘Mastodon’ is a competitor to—“
Why do journalists always say this? This is some capitalist-brained mindset.
The only thing the Fediverse competes with is your sleep schedule.

Mainstream will always say that social networks compete because it’s now ingrained that they are a form of entertainment where you’re mostly a passive consumer of an algorithm.
The social aspect is almost completely neglected and forgotten. Parasocial relationships are enough for most normal users.
@yassie_j Probably, or It's just me - to have something to write about. Seriously.
Clicks must add up.
@yassie_j Hell, half the idea of the federation model is that different social media sites /don't/ have to compete with each other - otherwise the site with the most users is the most useful to new users, which rapidly leads to a monopoly!
You know, that thing that capitalists always say they hate
@yassie_j Careful. I tried out Threads and it sucked up an entire hour of my time and I wasn't even trying hard (and I knew I had to wake up in the morning)...
That said, people are hard at work trying to figure out how to monetize the Fediverse or at least glom onto it in a way that they think could be profitable. Think of it like early-day NPR, where the money was provided by charitable listeners - until Ronald Reagan decided that public radio could accept advertising disguised as corporate support. We're an audience of 13 million, and someone thinks they can sell a product to that audience...

@yassie_j
Because most journalists don't have time to actually think about and understand the stuff they're writing about. Think about any news article you've read where you're a domain expert. Not sure about you, but I catch things wrong in my domain all the time. Now, extrapolate to domains where you can't judge. Are they somehow making fewer mistakes there? I doubt it.
I mean, I think you're also right. There's certainly a bias to see everything through capitalism's lens.
I really appreciate this point. Seeing a lot of posts on here about how to keep Mastodon relevant going forward or how "we must (de)federate to avoid getting swept away by Threads". But we're not *competing* against these other platforms by metrics, we're simply making the best social media site we can. I think that's important to keep in mind as we work through the valid concerns on both sides.
