“Threads is the most fun, most interesting new product of the year”.

Feel the rush!

That said, I can definitely see a use for it - people I want to follow who would never use Mastodon (or even Twitter for that matter) find Threads both low-friction and wider reach.

People such as non techie friends, bands, small businesses like crafters and niche accounts like wonderful ‘Tree Lined Lanes’ that I used to follow on Twitter. A necessary, privacy flouting, evil.

oh, it is "fun", but only under one condition
@jonhicks I think I need to be there. The wind is blowing away from Twitter. But I want to be here and so will almost certainly prioritise Mastodon. (Bluesky will, I think, go away. Although that’s where most of comics Twitter went.)
@craiggrannell @jonhicks A lot of Comics Twitter is also on Tumblr. If they do federation soon (as promised), we should be able to follow (and perhaps even interact with) them here someday.

serious question, obviously you're not the best person to talk about mastodon to but like. you reblogging someone that acknowledged that @photomatt said tumblr would implement activitypub; this is cl…

@oct2pus @garrett @jonhicks A pity that it’s all about how it wouldn’t make enough money. Same old.

@craiggrannell @garrett @jonhicks i mean at the end of the day they are a corporation. they have to make money.

They recently put out a bulletin to all users that basically lined out they are focusing on changing the product away from what their core audience cares about to try and capture passive viewers who just scroll and don't post ala tiktok and other feeds because their core users don't make them profitable.

At this point I don't really have high hopes for for-profit social media and for all its flaws i'd rather use stuff on activitypub since its currently the best solution for building not for profit social media.

@oct2pus @garrett @jonhicks Perhaps it’s naive to think it would ever come to pass, but I liked the idea of ActivityPub taking off as a foundational layer, allowing us to have some interop with Mastodon, Threads, Tumblr, Flipboard, WordPress, etc. Perhaps it’s just too nice an idea to exist in reality.
@jonhicks Maybe the fastest, easiest to debunk claim chowder of the past decade. It’s astounding.
@gedeonm @jonhicks ah but the central claim is not really about the strength of the app today, is it? It’s about an imaginary future version of the app, unshackled from the baggage of bothersome things like data privacy laws.
@kapowaz @gedeonm I understood it was said very much about the current state of the app, but yes, wait until the ads start!
@jonhicks @gedeonm I’m saying the above with tongue in cheek, just to be clear - it’s a pretty poor first pass. But I’m also trying to understand the pathology of somebody who sees it as a good thing and why they might be bullish about its future. As you say, wait for the ads!
@kapowaz @gedeonm There must've been a HUGE budget for paying ‘creators’ to shill for it!
@jonhicks My fave Threads screenshots are the reactions to ripped-off dril tweets
@jonhicks they aimed for Twitter but only hit LinkedIn.
@jonhicks That “steven” one shows up for me every time I load up the app. It’s the most banal shite I’ve ever read.
