Sometimes, I like to imagine an alternate reality where #BeOS and #RISCOS became the dominant computing platforms instead of MacOS and Windows.

@Cloudscout I like to imagine a world where computing stayed niche, and CP/M-86 was the dominant OS for PC, with the GEM GUI.

Or one where Commodore stayed in the PC clone business, but used the Amiga graphics chipset in a PC clone, and payed Microsoft to make Windows drivers for it, so they had the best platform for Windows, while still undercutting most other retailers.

@Cloudscout I wish CP/M had become the dominant OS. It was starting to have some interesting developments as it was dying.
@ukscone @Cloudscout Most of the people who were doing interesting things with CP/M around ~1993 seemed to move on to DOS systems or out of computing entirely around 1994-5.
@mos_8502 @Cloudscout There was just no money in doing CP/M stuff after then as everyone was moving to PCs. i supported a few things a bit longer but as my customers started dumping their CP/M systems & it was during my "I'm burnt out & I hate computers & computer people" period i didn't keep up with what was happening until 97ish by which time there wwere more interesting things than OSs
@Cloudscout OS/7 and NeXTSTEP and XOS.. oh my!

@Cloudscout I’d be curious of how things could have gone if C= hadn’t been mismanaged like crazy and they would have jumped on ARM fairly early on.

I can’t believe that AGA took so long, and still kept so many things the same (why not 8 channel sound with stereo panning per channel?).

I really liked AmigaOS as well, but it obviously needed big updates, that they didn’t invest in:(

@breadbin @Cloudscout Earth-2867, 1988 local time.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, inspired by the success their UK sister agency the BBC has had with the BBC Micro, contracts with Acorn to license the Archimedes design IP; they then contract with Commodore to release a localized version of the Archimedes as the CBC Commodore Archimedes, sold at cost to schools and homes alike throughout Canada, and later abroad in the US at a profit for Commodore, paired with a modified teletext service using AM radio frequencies, broadcasting text-based news and CBC Archie software for the public.

@Cloudscout well I like to imagine it very often
@Cloudscout I got my professional start developing educational software on #RISCOS. When I first started developing on MS-DOS I thought it was a joke.
@Cloudscout my version of this involves OS/2. #os2 #os2warp
@Cloudscout @hepto this all day!
@jag @Cloudscout I really miss BeOS
@hepto @Cloudscout my old micron celeron tower finally kicked the bucket last year. Had it running BeOS since 2000, mainly became my mp3 repo over the years.
@jag @hepto I'm going to give #HaikuOS a try as a daily driver.
@Cloudscout Me too. The Amiga would be going strong too as the ultimate multitasking video and audio editors choice.
