@HistoPol @ploum It is very telling that Meta sees no incongruity in asking for ‘off the record’ discussions about links with the Fediverse. Secrecy is the absolute opposite of the values of open systems.

My take: the threat is very real. But as the last 72 hours show even with 100 air gap between our networks and them “embrace” of ActivityPub happens. @HistoPol I really think Fediverse presents huge technical and managerial challenges to the centralized systems, and it takes time to sort all of it out, to sort out if it’s even possible to integrate.

Technically, ActivityPub is not a lightweight protocol. It takes a lot of resources to manage all the streams going left and right without the computational efficiency of just operating in-house.

Managerially, I don’t think any centralized service has really figured out how to integrate the Wild West into the more controlled environment their users expect, not even getting into moderation issues.

I think they’re moving slowly because there are real challenges and problems that have to be solved, and it takes time to solve them.

Sigh, I lived the XMPP episode, and while I did maintain any opensource packages, etc.

Yes, some other competitors did enter based internally on XMPP, I know, I did the customisation and extensions of the XMPP 3rd party network transports for them as an external consultant.

I can see their points but find others lacking (Fedi user tracking by #Meta, minority harassment, cultural aspects like inclusion, etc.):

I'd add, "And kiling Twitter." "Threads is not now, & never will be, about Mastodon. It’s not about embracing it, extending it, or extinguishing it. It’s not about it at all. So if Threads isn’t trying to overwhelm and destroy Mastodon, why have ActivityPub support at all? Two answers. First, “Look, see?
