And they are generally of the Christian faith, but they must have slept through the Sunday School discussion about empathy… if there was one.

Tangential to the point you're making but driven by the photo used, I don't know how we reached the point in US politics where people think it's reasonable to wear "identity group X for politician Y" shirts and expect to be taken seriously. It's a sign of the deep intellectual rot.
