Instagram Threads vs Mastodon. Looks like an easy choice.
‎Threads, an Instagram app

‎Say more with Threads — Instagram’s text-based conversation app. Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creator…

App Store
@vowe also i hate the fact that they hijack another term/notion
@slink @vowe that. I was thinking exactly the same thing!
@vowe please use alt text. Here is an example. https://shakedown.social/@clifff/110653848263872804

Attached: 4 images Meta’s new app “Threads” is up pre-order in the App Store. Let’s do a quick check on what data they want from you compared to the official Mastodon app, Mammoth and Ivory. Spoiler: Meta wants to know and track everything about you, and Mastodon doesn’t want anything. #threads

@vowe Not a fan of meta and its handlig of data, but this is a bad comparison. The mastodon app doesn't collect any data but obviously your server does. Not everything from meta's list but anything you post including data that are classified as sensitive like race or sexual orientation.
@vowe They should already put the DNA collection, it is one of the few data that they still have to collect
@vowe should have just named it Hoover instead.

@vowe

"Learn more"... LOL

@vowe id assume if someone from threads follows you, meta will still use your content event if you never signed up for threads. The only option seems to block the threads instance? Cc @[email protected]
@vowe this comparison makes it very clear.
@vowe meta be like "we were told not to collect any of this via the Facebook app, so how about this one?"

@vowe "Other data" conveniently covers, ah, everything.

"Sonstige Daten" deckt praktischerweise alles ab.

@vowe
In theory. In real life most people are to too comfortable and too cowardly to do something for themselves. Let alone for others.
@vowe I think Mastodon has many data linked to you as well since it's not E2E.
@vowe at least it will get more people into the #fediverse

@vowe And if they both use ActivityPub and can read the same people, then why go with Threads?

Makes me think holding back before defederating might be a way to help users realise there's a better way of doing social media.

@vowe the scary part is average user does not care about this over convenience and usability, so Threads will probably become The Next Big Thing.
@mariusz @vowe yes and no
I think once Apple activated a "accept manually each data you deem acceptable" and a non negligible amount of users (don't remember if it was >50% or not) preferred privacy and stopped use of health or location more often
Even when breaking the app (think a maps app without location or health app without health data) but giving control to the user when felt unreasonable
I think they switched to a global access authorization when installing or first launching an app only
@vowe Imagine. Facebook is being sleazy again.
@vowe @john_chu
What's Instagram Threads? Am I just old now?
@vowe @timbray But via near-universal Facebook tracking cookies, doesn't Meta already have much of your browsing history? ("Health & Fitness," though?! Does that mean access to your local, private data or is it acknowledging “Health & Fitness categories are among the things we derive and store about you from your browsing and search history?”
@vowe how do the app sizes compare?

@vowe

I really don't understand why everybody here on Mastodon seems to focus on the privacy aspect. Well, of course I do, were on Mastodon after all.

But time and time again, it has become clear that users choose convenience and user-friendliness over trivial things like privacy.

@vowe

Mastodon has a few weaknesses (well, the underlying protocol) that makes it harder to use. Of course, this "weakness" depends on how you look at it, but Mastodon is absolutely not user-friendly. It does not offer the advantages of a centralized network.

If Threads at least offers the same stuff as Twitter and makes a good first impression, it has a good chance of being successful. Especially now, with Musk rendering Twitter useless.

@vowe

The only way of getting rid of this behavior by social media giants is to have regulations that value user pricacy, like in the EU.

Threads will not be available in the EU thanks to GDPR and privacy rules. More info (random source): https://m.independent.ie/business/technology/no-instagram-threads-app-in-the-eu-irish-dpc-says-metas-new-twitter-rival-wont-be-launched-here/a1927220337.html.

Thankful to be an EU netizen.

Meta will not launch its new Twitter rival, Threads, in Ireland or the EU for the foreseeable future.

@vowe I would add another point to this list. Instagram's UI doesn't make me feel like writing long posts and sharing any value. It's more about fun and visual junk rather than something meaningful.

@vowe What, you don't want your Twitter clone to know all of your contacts and purchases? Concerned about it getting "other data" like that isn't a perfectly descriptive point?

Pffffth, nerd

@vowe #threads Uses the #Fediverse. Servers need to block them if you don't want to interact with them.
@vowe I know it’s hard to grasp, but most people don’t care (at all)… they will always give their data to meta/google without a care in the world…

@vowe
#AltText there are two screenshots from an Apple iPhone comparing the Instagram (meta? Facebook?) Threads to regular mastodon app and data collection. The mastodon app screenshot says "no data collected" while the threads one exact text:

@vowe

I don't find Instagram users all that interesting.

Most of them are there to post selfies, not have conversations.

@vowe My jaw dropped when I saw their privacy card
@vowe @Digital_Archivist
FYI - no way going to join in Threads.
@vowe Would you consider adding alt text to these photos?
@vowe except technically Mastodon is getting its disclosure wrong.
If someone makes a post containing their exercise schedule that is health and fitness data, then technically Mastodon processes that data.
@vowe Whoops! We had the same post idea..I was a day late. 🤷‍♂️

@vowe
Users should be able to turn every single one of those on or off as they see fit, at any time.
@vowe yikes 😬
no way I am touching it
@vowe all that's missing for a Thread is access to childhood pet's name, mother's maiden name, and favorite teacher. 🤦‍♀️
Thanks, I'll stick with #mastadon 🦣

@vowe

Trigger warning: This uses the default Mastodon app. I wasted a few weeks struggling with it, before someone told me it's one of the worst ones, and it's more of a demo.

Maybe redo this with Tusky?

@vowe Threads won't launch in the EU any time soon anyway due to GDPR.
@vowe The Mastodon iOS app does not collect any data, other than all the data you send to the instance you register on, where the admin (who does not report to any sort of regulating body) not only has full access to every byte you send them, but can also make a bunch of arbitrary decisions that affect your safety and privacy without your consent.
@vowe Habe mir dazu Metas Datenschutzerklärung angeschaut. Davon gibt es eine druckerfreundliche Version. Sie hat 142 Seiten. 😬
@vowe But it's not quite true, as Mastodon does (need to) collect some user data, like your e-mail address, telephone number and some other things. That's necessary for the app to work. Those aren't shared with third parties, though, afaik.
@vowe For you, yes. But "everybody" already has Instagram, so adding this won't matter.
