I feel seen
@atanae I do this exact thing when I try to read a book, wow.
@atanae
Groundhog Day, but the protagonist doesn't go crazy because most of each iteration is new to them.
@atanae @forestine I struggle to explain to people why I can’t listen to the podcast they’re recommending me. I’m saving this for just such an occasion.

@atanae how can that person describe me so perfectly? It's uncanny.

Why is it "Gothic" though?

@atanae is this an ADHD thing? i just do this all the time lol
@slips I do too, and I have not been diagnosed as ADHD. I suspect there is overlap.
Wait, is this ADHD? I thought I didn't have ADHD, but I do have this.
@atanae the worst is when you start thinking maybe this is that time your instincts are right and this bit is actually just boring irrelevant crap that should be skipped - but you can't tell if that's actually the case

worst-er is when you've wasted the day finally managing to listen to that bit of the thing and it turns out your instincts were right

anyway this podcast could have been a blog post
@atanae you aren’t alone. Hang in there!
@atanae Yes. This is me. Every day.
@atanae
Hell, I have done this while reading. Without any other tasks in the background. I'll just snap into focus and realize I'd been reading without paying attention and have to flip back a dozen pages or so.
@atanae Oh sweet glory, this is me. I've given up on podcasts for this reason 😭
@atanae Yes. But with TV shows and falling asleep. fr.

@atanae

100%

Worse is while driving, I can do this with 10-30 minutes. 🤦🏻‍♂️

@atanae @glyph I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.
@atanae Then going back again to this time really listen to this part and brain says: Oh, I heard some of those words just minutes ago... boooring...
@atanae I had to reread portions of this (I call it sleep reading/listening/driving)
@atanae Too real, but also thoroughly validating.

@atanae Holy smokes this is me with watching television or movies sometimes- even if it's a story I REALLY wanna see.

I have whole movies that I barely recall because of it.

@atanae i have tried listening to podcast but i can't because of that 😭
(always try to go to the video version if avaliable to have something to focus on)
@atanae this is why I have "working podcasts" and "walking podcasts" the latest are the one i need to pay more attention to like history podcast or fiction. Working podcasts are discussion one that I need to keep me from thinking too many things at one. I still do the back 30 second quite a bit though.
@atanae HOW IS THIS NOT NEUROTYPICAL??? I DO THIS ALL THE TIME 😭
@atanae I relate so much omg
@atanae I’m in this toot and I don’t know how I feel about it.
@atanae This is the reason I don't listen to podcasts pretty much ever.

@atanae
@leah

i'm in this post and i don't like it

@atanae @Estrella This, but with audiobooks. Which is my cue to go watch a stupidly entertaining YouTube video and come back to it.
@atanae @kalleboo I hate being in that multi-sensory environment & having enough awareness that I just missed something interesting. It’s like my brain is aware it was interesting, I just didn’t process the actual information. It’s like the form of blindness where the brain will react to an object coming at the eye fast and you’ll blink, but it doesn’t process visual information in a way that’s available consciously. Well, except that I get to go back to get and process the audio information.
@atanae be kind,rewind! Totally gives me Video Palacevibes! I also do enjoy relistening to the same part at least a good 4 times before I’m sure I’ve got it all! 😂
@atanae I'm p sure the whole "x gothic" memes were supposed to make places sound unsettling like a horror setting, not just describe something I do multiple times a day in a straightforwards manner
@EveOfTheFuture Ya, I also don’t think it’s solely ADHD. But it’s amazing just how many people resonated with this one observation - a reminder that so much more connects us despite our unique circumstances.
@atanae Done this so many times with audiobooks it's like you're calling me out.
@atanae me in the car with one hand on the wheel and the other on the back-30-seconds button
@atanae I've long wondered if I have undiagnosed ADHD as this resonates pretty hard.

@atanae

This time for real I will focus on what's being said

*five seconds later, she had opened a new tab and was scrolling through fedi, while forgetting to pay attention to the podcast*

I sometimes get up to like 5 iterations of this before I actually manage to force myself to listen lol

@atanae Is this ADHD only? Maybe I should get tested.
@atanae
Too real. This is why i have to do video tutorials multiple times to "get it"
