A little chain of this evening’s culture, following my earlier venture into cinema criticism. Tonight’s amble pods:
Super High Quality Podcast - life in The War on Drugs (the band, not the failed so-called policy) about their post Covid tours. Fascinating insight into musicians and touring
The Bugle - a satirical saunter around world news with Andy Zaltzman and guests. Consistently funny with some of the best puns out there.
#Podcasts
(Continued) The Infinite Monkey Cage - wasps v bees. Remains pretty unmissable for pop science
History Hit on Toto Koopman - fascinating story about a bisexual heroine.
I have a fairly static roster of podcasts but like to dip into other stuff now and then. Recommendations always welcome, but #TestMatchSpecial trumps everything

On to books - I read every night in the bath. Current read is The Mabinogion, which is me trying to bone up on my Welsh folklore/mythology. Definitely an area I need to dive more deeply into. Tonight I finished the story of Peredur son of Efrog, an Arthurian tale.
Finally some telly: #Annika, a Scottish Scandi Noir with the incomparable #NicolaWalker - enjoying it thus far. Now on series 10 of #TheBlacklist which went beyond preposterous years ago but is unmissable because #JamesSpader. I would pay cash money to watch him do literally anything. #RichardWatchesTheTelly

I saw the trailer for Annika…
Worth a watch, then?
@Pam_Nashes @meer_salt I really enjoyed it. Such a pleasure.

Two recommendations, added to my iPlayer list 😁
The other thing I added today was this, about the Titan, made a few months ago; in light of recent events it will be a little odd but hopefully illuminating to a degree.
The article in the New Yorker about the history of Titan was eye popping and made me wonder how anything like that, for which so many red flags were raised, was ever all to operate.

The Travel Show - Take Me To Titanic

A ground-breaking expedition to explore the world's most famous shipwreck.

@Pam_Nashes I’m enjoying it, it is different enough to rise above the cliches of the detective thriller, and yer man Walker is brilliant, as ever. It is whimsical, if anything.

@meer_salt

I really enjoyed #Annika. If you’ve not done so already, it’s worth checking out bbc sounds for the original 15min radio #AnnikaStranded stories. They’re all one-handers with #NicolaWalker and imo well worth a listen.

@mrsactive ooh, I did not know about that. Will give them a go. Sound just the thing for our evening amble. Thank you.
@meer_salt @mrsactive Those who complain about the comments to camera in this have obviously not listened to it on radio. I am curious about the decision to change a small boy into a teenage girl

@Little_mavis @meer_salt

I would guess the character switch makes some sense with having speaking characters (other than Annika).

@meer_salt that man has the most magical voice
