@mastodonmigration
From the point of view of the investors, #enshittification is not suicidal. Itās a cash out. It turns a long term track record of usefulness to consumers and suppliers into a short term grift. Itās the natural result of capitalist-backed internet properties.
#Enshittification is probably the most important phenomena @pluralistic has identified and articulated. Nobel Prize in Economics worthy, really.
The upside of course is the opposing market force of competition. When sites cash out, the window is short for the grifters, and new sites to serve the now-abandoned markets should spring up.
If theyāre good enough for their consumers and suppliers, theyāll last until their own #enshittification processes conclude.
Easiest (and only?) way to avoid the cycle and be more-or-less permanently useful is ādonāt be capitalist.ā Youāll still have other problems, but #enshittification isnāt one.
@internetarchive and #Mastodon appear to be operating this way, but are vulnerable to attack by capitalist interests. But they wonāt go grifter - thereās nobody to collect a payoff.
