If you're thinking of using Facebook/Instagram's Twitter clone, here's a reminder of just how invasive it will be of your privacy:

h/t @nelson

@dangillmor @nelson Is that bad? That looks bad.
@michaelgemar I think it’s the same as the Facebook and Instagram app get now. So it’s bad but for people already using them it’s nothing they aren’t already giving up.
@robstahlnecker I suppose, but it is nonetheless absurdly intrusive.
@robstahlnecker I feel like this is what Meta is banking on from a product perspective *___*
@dangillmor @nelson I mean at least they are up front about it. Pretty sure Facebook and insta have been secretly collecting this data for a decade now.
@dangillmor @nelson and even with all that, it still has many of the same restrictions twitter does (you probably aren't seeing most of the posts of those you follow, esp pages, since they aren't paying for it, and posts are likely out of order, pages likely have to pay for API usage, and posts on it aren't public), so...what is the point?
@dangillmor @nelson
I’m honestly surprised that your DNA profile isn’t listed.

@dangillmor @nelson Another Metafact about Threads: The company already created (and shut down) an app with the same name before.
Pulling a bit of a Google, it seems? (Both privacy and culture-wise!)

@dangillmor @nelson Cambridge Analytica will be happy!
@dangillmor @nelson but we don’t need to use it right? We should be able to follow accounts from here

@lgtm @dangillmor @nelson this is a bit contentious. Some instances are going to block it, some not.

On one hand, being able to interact with mainstream social media without having to download their data scraper is nice, but on the other hand there’s fears that by federating with them you’re allowing them to harvest your user’s data (although they could likely do this anyway if they really wanted to if your instance is public)

@dangillmor @nelson at first I thought this was satire. So I looked it up and saw it was nauseatingly real.
@dangillmor @nelson
They forgot access to:
🔹️Missing socks from your dryer
🔹️Under your bed dust bunny count
🔹️Automated light timers
🔹️Tupperware lid thief identity
@dangillmor @nelson So basically don’t reveal anything I don’t want to reveal on social media?
@MotherOfMercy @dangillmor @nelson well yes, but Meta, like TikTok, is expert at secretly extracting info from your phone that you don't know you're sending them. Look how many times they've both been caught uploading contacts, pilfering clipboard, tracking gps, and automatically resetting privacy settings when they think you're not looking. I don't think the apps can be made safe.

@dangillmor @nelson This needs to be put in context, some are comparing it to the Mastodon app. Threads is part of Instagram, it’s data that’s part of everything Facebook. So that’s bad. Mastodon though isn’t entirely as benign as it suggests either. The Mastodon app might not collect data, this says nothing about the server and the terms of use of that server. Keep that in mind too. Both are still social media. It’s just one is very open the other is (imho) very evil.
@dangillmor @nelson they can shove that where the sun doesn’t shine
@dangillmor @nelson Health and Fitness just to 'tweet' is not suspicious is it?
@dangillmor @nelson This has been misinterpreted—it's perfectly normal and (per se) nothing to worry about:

Attached: 2 images I've seen 2 or 3 posts in my TL re: App Store privacy info for Threads vs. Mastodon. https://mastodon.social/@jsq/110653072170221591 for example. I feel like people greatly misunderstand the App Store privacy labels. They're not at all a ground truth you should read without careful interpretation. - Entirely self reported - No consistent auditing or data quality enforcement by Apple - Very vague, both on the scope of categories and what's "collection" - "May be collected" is a "worst case" statement. Mastodon
@dangillmor @nelson we know that fb purchased deep hooks into Android. Do we know if these permissions will use that and their product will gather all the data that way, or do new products have different licensing?
@dangillmor On iOS, use "Ask app not to track" when launching the app for the first time. Or change the setting afterwards. There is even a setting to make all new app tracking request to be automatically denied. It is not on by default but that's one of the 1st thing I do on a new iPhone. Hopefully Android has a similar privacy protection but I would not know.
@dangillmor @nelson I have not used the FB android app for this reason. I do use FB in Firefox hoping there is more privacy that way but not sure.
@dangillmor the catch all of "other data" at the end 😱🙈
@dangillmor @nelson Apple privacy “nutrition labels” were a great idea. I just really hate the name.
@dangillmor @nelson I think “Other data” is my favorite.
@dangillmor @nelson I am not thinking of that. I'm thinking of ways to get rid of Facebook. Not quite there yet. But thinking about it 😀
@dangillmor @nelson I think the Privacy Nutrition labels was one of the best requirements for apps introduced by Apple and Google. With that much data being accessed I’d think twice about downloading the app.
@dangillmor
It is not so much about privacy. It is more about monetization of the details of our lives.
@nelson
@dangillmor @nelson I won't be using it when it becomes available.
@dangillmor @nelson This is why I don't install native apps if a web version is available. Correspondingly, this is why more and more "services" are app-only.
@dangillmor @nelson Fun >>>>>> everything else including privacy as far as recruiting people and building a real community. Where’s the dopamine rush here? It’s mostly very very boring. No amount of warnings about data can inspire people, that’s fear based negativity. The app has to be FUN.
@dangillmor @nelson not only theirs but everyone elses, as they'll scrape everything!

@dangillmor @nelson I will happily greet Threads users when they arrive. Sure, the Threads app will probably use keywords or semantic analysis to insert ads for those people who use it, but *I* won’t get any, which is fine by me.

Of course, knowing Facebook, they’ll do their best to try to associate my Mastodon account with other data they have about me, but is that really a surprise?
