Mastodon isn't perfect.

But the fact a social network exists that is completely free to use

has no venture capital investors

has no shareholders to answer to

has no growth targets

with a web interface with zero tracking cookies

and mobile apps with zero trackers at all

with ten thousand server administrators who donate their time for user safety

is - in my opinion - mindbogglingly cool, given the state of the world we live in. Not everything has to be shit. People make things better.

The media narrative seem against remote work, and yet data shows the opposite:

In tech:
• 12.9% — Jan 2020
• 38.6% — Aug 2022
• 40.3% — May 2023

And growth is not just in tech but across all industries, reaching 15.8%, which is very meaningful.

A year ago 58% of people worked remotely at least part of the time.

A good question to ask is where the limit is going to be if all the companies that could, would offer remote contracts. It's not 100%, but where it's going to naturally stop?
