I'm kinda obsessed with Rogue and roguelike games in general (and weird monsters). I was reading this great article from 2016 about their history that I boosted yesterday (thanks to @WoodooProd for alerting me to it).

As I read and poked around the web to check out these early roguelikes, I loved these two screens from a SUPER early roguelike (Pedit5, from 1975).

Monsters loading! 🤣

One of my favourite rogue-likes is Powder.
I always make sure to put it on every device since the Nokia 6600.

@Englebert3rd @WoodooProd Powder! Oh, awesome I hadn't heard of that one! Gotta check it out. I play a bunch of modern ones that one or both of you guys may have seen me going on about 🤣 but it's these, and most are everywhere including Steam and some are even on Xbox. You guys tried any of these? (Sorry for the crappy pic haha).

Skull Rogue is cheesy, weird and fantastic (basically shovelware but I love it 🤣) and I always go back to a lot of the ones in the top row - Wizodd, Colt Canyon, Bit Dungeon Plus, Quest of Dungeons (turn based), and Demon's Tier+. Some of the ones near the bottom venture towards twin stick shooters, which I also love.

@jake4480 @WoodooProd Castle of the Winds, now that's a name I haven't heard in a looong long time
@mihaelbrenko hahaha okay so you're a fan of old rogue games too! HELL YEAH hahaha. A big passion of mine.
@jake4480 I haven't played them much lately but I used to play them quite a lot. What are your favourites?
@mihaelbrenko as a kid, it was Mac Moria that first hooked me, which is a clone of Moria - the LotR theme haha. I love the original Rogue too - there's several over at dosgames.com (https://dosgames.com/listing.php?sterms2=Rogue) that I play often via their cool in-browser DOSBox setup. ADOM, Angband, Avanor - so many great ones!

@jake4480 @WoodooProd An excellent and succinct history! I'm glad to see PLATO get a mention!
@jake4480 I've played a significant amount of pedit5! It has a different feel to roguelikes, but has definite similarities in theme.
@rodneylives @WoodooProd oh nice! I still need to try it myself. Like most of the ones I save.. I played Mac Moria as a kid on my family's Performa in the 90s and got hooked, and there's so many modern roguelikes on Switch or Steam.. so many to try. Hadn't even hears of Pedit5 til @WoodooProd posted that article! The history is fascinating.

@jake4480 The place I played it is Cyber1, which is an internet-facing PLATO system you can apply for an account on. Try cyber1.org (when I checked it just now the site was down, but I suspect it's temporary).

@WoodooProd

@rodneylives @WoodooProd hmm yeah seems down to me but I will keep checking - thanks!
