How do you spot an idiot? Look for the person who is cruel. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest...
@baarda Who is the speaker?
@billbennett @baarda Gov of Illinois JB Pritzker as I understand it.

@baarda "Idiot" is a medical term with an extremely dark history in this country. It was used to forcibly sterilize individuals without their consent. Something that could still happen today because Buck v Bell still stands

Gov Pritzger's ableist metaphor is insulting, insensitive & condescending. It is especially galling that he ties kindness directly to intelligence.

@oedipusnj @baarda No offense here, but I believe you lost the plot...

He's right, in a sense. All the worst, most evil people are emotionally stupid. The worst part is, they view being emotionally stupid as something to be proud of--and emotional intelligence--as something shameful, in need of eradicating. It's why so many conservatives hate education and liberalism. Keep them dumb, angry, and vengeful. That way, they'll always go against their best interests.

@oedipusnj @baarda I believe that's what he was inferring. It's always interesting to see a billionaire that doesn't have fascist tendencies, right?
@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda One thing I'll point out here is the difference between intention and impact. There's always this argument that people make (or those defending them make). "It wasn't my intention to hurt." And yet the impact for the hurt is substantial. That argument places the burden on the people hurt rather than the one who did the hurting. It displaces the responsibility onto the other party. And there's no change as a result.
@Woofman @baarda @baarda @Woofman I know what he was intending to say, but he could've easily have used less ableist & loaded language. I am extremely wary of anyone who ties "intelligence" to kindness. If he was talking about emotional intelligence he should've used that term & not used a term commonly used by trolls & teenagers & those who never outgrew their teen years online.
@Woofman @baarda People, especially people in high elective office must be very careful about the language they use. I routinely hear politicians talk about the opposition blindly following their leader off a cliff. While you may excuse it as an expression of speech, it clearly implies— no inferring necessary—that when you are blind you are too ignorant to think for yourself; so ignorant that you can be led to your death without even knowing

@Woofman @baarda Growing up in an ableist society, we have come to view these words as abstractions, ignoring the very real & pernicious history of many of these words—especially in regards the mentally disabled & neurodivergent—as medical & legal terms.

Nobody appreciates or benefits from being reduced to a negative metaphor.

We, the disabled, are not symbols, we are sentient human beings. Be aware of what you say.

@oedipusnj @baarda To me it feels like you're blowing something I see as a rather innocuous statement, out of proportion. I get that there can be ill intent with regards to intellect and ableism, as you point out, but I just don't feel it applies here. Now if it were something about intelligence said by a far-right politician, I for sure would agree with your sentiment. I just feel it's a bit misguided considering the source. So much worse is said than this all the time, from a certain source.

@oedipusnj @baarda Rather than explicitly said, I sometimes think things are better said in more of a discreet manner rather than overly overt.

Our viewpoints differ on the matter and I think it's best left to agree to disagree. I don't want to harp on this any longer.

@baarda @Woofman My viewpoint on the matter cannot help but be impacted by my being disabled myself.

The reason this has caused an absolute furor in the disabled community is precisely because it comes from someone who is not a right wing demagogue, but someone who should be a natural ally of the disabled & disenfranchised.

There is absolutely no excuse for any politician of any party—or any individual—to use ableist slurs & tie kindness to intelligence

@oedipusnj @baarda I mean, I'm sure I would be considered disabled as well, but I just don't see the same kind of threat of such a statement as you do.

@Woofman @baarda If that's the case, you're very much out of touch with the mainstream of disabled opinion. For those of us who're severely or multiply disabled, this is only the tip of the insult & injury iceberg

And if there's one thing we cannot stand is being lectured as to what we should think by people who know our experience better than we ourselves.

It's your right to support Pritzker. It certainly my right to criticize him for being unambiguously ableist.

@oedipusnj @baarda Well, I'm sorry you have to deal that. I just don't think he was taking a shot at disabled people with that comment. You can feel that way and I'll respect your opinion of it.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda not how bigotry works dude.

You don't get to decide whether we experience harm.

Marginalized people are telling you that this is harmful and Hateful.
AND factually incorrect.

Hes taking a shot and the weapon IS POINTING AT DISABLED PEOPLE.

@Woofman @baarda You say all that because you are not yourself disabled & you have no idea what it is like to constantly be infantilized by most of the people you come into contact with. To be completely ignored by another segment of people you come into contact with. To be the object of derision from another segment of people you come into contact with. To be the object of hostility from yet another segment of the people you come into contact with.

Check your privilege

@oedipusnj @baarda Actually, I do. Maybe not all of those things, but for sure the first one. My own father, for example. I guess you missed my last reply before you replied.
@Woofman @baarda Yes, I did not receive this message until after I had already replied.
@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda dude.
You are wrong and playing the privilege card to prevent being called on it.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda to you the fact that you are dehumanizing the people you are talking to is "blowing something out of proportion"

to me as a disabled woman?
You are are definitely ableist and don't want to stop thinking people like me might be capable of experiencing something.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda why is it acceptable to be a bigot as long as you vote blue?
@oedipusnj @Woofman @baarda this is my feeling too. I feel his sentiment is just to reflect that kindness is not always our default way of thinking and sometimes it is effortful. But the speech could have ironically, been kinder without the ableist language.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda emotionally stupid isnt a thing.

The metaphor is cruel and inaccurate.
And unintelligent.

You come across as an ableist jerk who doesn't believe disabled people are entitled to equal respect

Exactly the kind of person the metaphor describes. Isn't that interesting?

@CatHat @oedipusnj @baarda Emotional intelligence is real, though. It's just that it's usually referred to by its other term, empathy. Emotionally stupid people don't care how their words or actions hurt other people. It's nothing to be upset about or defend. Obviously I can't say for sure if it was a metaphorical statement or not, but that's how I read it. Well, anyway, sorry about upsetting you.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda that makes you both emotionally stupid and intellectually unimpressive.
You don't care how your words and actions affect other people.
Neither does anyone else who defends hate

Bluntly..

That video is a confession

@CatHat @oedipusnj @baarda It's perplexing... that when you simply agree that hateful people are idiots, you get attacked for it with false accusations of character. If that's what floats your boat, then have fun. 👍 However, I'm done with such spectacles.🤷

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda ableism is hate

And doubling down is definitely not a very sensible or intelligent way to react when that fact is pointed out.

You can stop being hateful whenever you want. Im not stopping you.

@baarda

How true. This reminds me of Dawkins' famous closing to The Selfish Gene (from memory) where he points out that if we are to overcome the elemental selfishness that our genes provide us with we have to grow and learn to think and act above and beyond that. That's true both of individuals and of society as a whole. (By the way, it's so nice to see accurate subtitles in a video clip for a change, without hopeless typos and grammatical errors.)

@baarda

well this guy is an idiot without being cruel, just being cruely stupid.

We "single out" people because we are small group social beings .. tribal. Not a heard species. And our ability to be kind has the same root .. social beings.

(christians bending evolution to their thinking .. el resto paga mastercard)

@baarda

very good; thanks for posting that. My Father had a Masters from Northwestern University. carry on

@baarda This is wonderful. Thank you.

@baarda

What a great graduation speech and statement, by governor Pritzker of Illinois!

It needs to be spread everywhere!

@baarda "Perfect love casts out fear."

I didn't "get" this verse until one time I was walking from a train station somewhere. I noticed a suspicious-looking guy with an exposed fly-knife on a backpack following me. I decided to hide in a nearby Burger King and let him pass.

He followed me into the BK. (1/2)

@baarda

I had no way of self-defense, so I just casually started talking with the staff and told him there's that guy following me.

The staff waved it off. They knew him and he came in the regularly.

Made me realize I was seeing the "suspicious" person through fear, not love. He just wanted to chill out in BK and here I was thinking he wanted to murder me.

It was a challenge to me to always see people in a loving way, even if they might have ill intent on their minds. (2/2)

@baarda

These days, it seems as if the cruelest people are the ones who identify as Christians

@baarda @pinhman I don’t often want to boost or celebrate white men (I’m one) speaking, but this is awesome. Thanks for sharing it.
@baarda I'm so glad my scrolling stopped on this clip. We need more, and more, and more reminders and perspectives just like this. Thank you.
@baarda yes please. Thanks for posting.
@baarda
I think this is the worst take I've seen on Mastodon yet.
@baarda calling yourself a cruel and unintelligent person would at least cause less harm

@baarda @chaoddity

This is a REALLY ableist speech.
Disabled people are MUCH more likely to be abused than abusive .
Intelligence and compassion are.very different
and trying to connect cruelty with the VICTIMS of hate is really harmful

@baarda
This reminds me of

The Declaration of Principles is a preamble which defines the mission of the Interstellar Alliance drafted by G'kar. The Drazi, along with others, refused to sign the Declaration of Principles on the grounds that they did not need to sign because they had always respected their neighbours. After the Drazi Freehold's complicity in the persistent Raider attacks on the Enphili Homeworld was brought to light, all parties agreed to sign the declaration, shortly after it was again rewritten by...

@baarda Good message which has been said in a very simple language.
@baarda can this guy run for president?
@baarda Ah, I see: Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker
@baarda @siracusa could you tell a foreigner, who is speaking in that video?
@baarda This makes me think of my supervisors. They're both brilliant minded and incredibly wise but most importantly, remarkably kind.

@baarda

Everybody is arguing about inculsive language, so I'm instead just going to endorse hungover sad girl as the most relatable thing in both the video and the thread.

@baarda @siracusa Who cares if they are the smartest, it’s being the kindest that matters.
@Blickwinkel
