How do you spot an idiot? Look for the person who is cruel. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest...

@baarda "Idiot" is a medical term with an extremely dark history in this country. It was used to forcibly sterilize individuals without their consent. Something that could still happen today because Buck v Bell still stands

Gov Pritzger's ableist metaphor is insulting, insensitive & condescending. It is especially galling that he ties kindness directly to intelligence.

@oedipusnj @baarda No offense here, but I believe you lost the plot...

He's right, in a sense. All the worst, most evil people are emotionally stupid. The worst part is, they view being emotionally stupid as something to be proud of--and emotional intelligence--as something shameful, in need of eradicating. It's why so many conservatives hate education and liberalism. Keep them dumb, angry, and vengeful. That way, they'll always go against their best interests.

@Woofman @baarda @baarda @Woofman I know what he was intending to say, but he could've easily have used less ableist & loaded language. I am extremely wary of anyone who ties "intelligence" to kindness. If he was talking about emotional intelligence he should've used that term & not used a term commonly used by trolls & teenagers & those who never outgrew their teen years online.
@Woofman @baarda People, especially people in high elective office must be very careful about the language they use. I routinely hear politicians talk about the opposition blindly following their leader off a cliff. While you may excuse it as an expression of speech, it clearly implies— no inferring necessary—that when you are blind you are too ignorant to think for yourself; so ignorant that you can be led to your death without even knowing

@Woofman @baarda Growing up in an ableist society, we have come to view these words as abstractions, ignoring the very real & pernicious history of many of these words—especially in regards the mentally disabled & neurodivergent—as medical & legal terms.

Nobody appreciates or benefits from being reduced to a negative metaphor.

We, the disabled, are not symbols, we are sentient human beings. Be aware of what you say.

@oedipusnj @baarda To me it feels like you're blowing something I see as a rather innocuous statement, out of proportion. I get that there can be ill intent with regards to intellect and ableism, as you point out, but I just don't feel it applies here. Now if it were something about intelligence said by a far-right politician, I for sure would agree with your sentiment. I just feel it's a bit misguided considering the source. So much worse is said than this all the time, from a certain source.

@oedipusnj @baarda Rather than explicitly said, I sometimes think things are better said in more of a discreet manner rather than overly overt.

Our viewpoints differ on the matter and I think it's best left to agree to disagree. I don't want to harp on this any longer.

@baarda @Woofman My viewpoint on the matter cannot help but be impacted by my being disabled myself.

The reason this has caused an absolute furor in the disabled community is precisely because it comes from someone who is not a right wing demagogue, but someone who should be a natural ally of the disabled & disenfranchised.

There is absolutely no excuse for any politician of any party—or any individual—to use ableist slurs & tie kindness to intelligence

@oedipusnj @baarda I mean, I'm sure I would be considered disabled as well, but I just don't see the same kind of threat of such a statement as you do.

@Woofman @baarda If that's the case, you're very much out of touch with the mainstream of disabled opinion. For those of us who're severely or multiply disabled, this is only the tip of the insult & injury iceberg

And if there's one thing we cannot stand is being lectured as to what we should think by people who know our experience better than we ourselves.

It's your right to support Pritzker. It certainly my right to criticize him for being unambiguously ableist.

@oedipusnj @baarda Well, I'm sorry you have to deal that. I just don't think he was taking a shot at disabled people with that comment. You can feel that way and I'll respect your opinion of it.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda not how bigotry works dude.

You don't get to decide whether we experience harm.

Marginalized people are telling you that this is harmful and Hateful.
AND factually incorrect.

Hes taking a shot and the weapon IS POINTING AT DISABLED PEOPLE.

@Woofman @baarda You say all that because you are not yourself disabled & you have no idea what it is like to constantly be infantilized by most of the people you come into contact with. To be completely ignored by another segment of people you come into contact with. To be the object of derision from another segment of people you come into contact with. To be the object of hostility from yet another segment of the people you come into contact with.

Check your privilege

@oedipusnj @baarda Actually, I do. Maybe not all of those things, but for sure the first one. My own father, for example. I guess you missed my last reply before you replied.
@Woofman @baarda Yes, I did not receive this message until after I had already replied.
@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda dude.
You are wrong and playing the privilege card to prevent being called on it.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda to you the fact that you are dehumanizing the people you are talking to is "blowing something out of proportion"

to me as a disabled woman?
You are are definitely ableist and don't want to stop thinking people like me might be capable of experiencing something.

@Woofman @oedipusnj @baarda why is it acceptable to be a bigot as long as you vote blue?
