the old internet is dying, the new internet struggles to be born, now is the time of monsters
fucking hell, gfycat too?
If YouTube falls, I think we're officially entering a new era of internet.
This post is an unmitigated banger lol
@cadey
YouTube s fall will be the burning of the library of Alexandria.
@cadey last year I would've said YouTube would never fall without a replacement, but ... Yeah. It's been a wild year
@cadey I'm just waiting for an ipfs powered alternative...
@cadey I've seen rumblings of Blogger photos being potentially deleted
@cadey or an old one
@foone @cadey Dusting off the old Scott Yanoff list of interesting telnet servers then (http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/DataSources/Yanoff.html).
Telnet sites - the Yanoff List

@cadey I don’t think YouTube will fall tbh
@cadey You Tube will not fail. High and mighty Elon Musk is going to buy both YouTube and Facebook. He plans to merge them into one platform. The new Platform will be known as YOU-TWIT-FACE
@cadey oh what, it's been discontinued, damn, thats sad :(
@cadey god dammit why is the internet falling apart
@raven the old internet is dying, the new internet struggles to be born, now is the time of monsters
@cadey oh good, we need more werewolves
@cadey the old internet is internot. the new internet struggles to be inter. now is the time of net
@cadey SO MANY random chat apps will have broken "gifs" because they were just storing gfycat URLs
@cadey this post is how I found out. it’s ALL going down, huh
@cadey I'm almost afraid to ask, but what exactly does this mean?
@RachaelAva1024 @cadey if I have to guess: Twitter is burning, Reddit is crashing, that's the old Internet dying. Mastodon and Lemmy are still confidential and have their own problems, whether they represent the new Internet or that would be something else it's still not quite there.
@RachaelAva1024 @cadey It's a reference to Antonio Gramsci, a Marxist philosopher.

@RachaelAva1024 @cadey it's a riff on a translation of a Gramsci quote.

Basically, there's a transitional phase where things are falling apart but the new thing that will replace it hasn't been formed. In this period between we get morbid symptoms - not very pleasant.

@cadey  i like your opinion

@cadey ah. That explains it.

So does that mean the internet version of being a prepper is hoarding not just the socials but also email addresses of everyone you care to keep in touch with, and possibly running a small web server you physically possess the hardware for?

@cadey The old internet died after the 1990s. It's now being reincarnated, albeit slowly, as people are looking towards decentralization again and away from corporate dictatorship. I hope that email once again becomes a federated service instead of being in the control of the hands of a few companies.
@cadey YA HEAR THAT, GUYS? IT'S OUR TIME!
@ragnell @cadey *arising from my prison* it’s time to blog
@cadey the old internet is returning

@cadey AAA GOJIRA

(side note: whatever else it has become, Godzilla began as a cautionary tale against polluting the environment with thermonuclear bomb testing)

@Soozcat @cadey TBF even the recent american adaptions feature conservation and nuclear threats as central themes. More topical than ever really!
@cadey Actually, the new internet is going to have the decentralization that was the internet of the 1990s but will have the modern look and appeal of this century. In interesting times we live in I say. Very interesting.
@cadey add another one to the pile: gfycat is shutting down, likely due to VC funding drying up.
@cadey In the last cycle the monsters became birds. But given the level of care we take of our planet, this time it will probably be gigantic carnivorous rats. With an attitude.
@cadey It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
@kickguy223 throw rock
@cadey You cast a stone into the darkness, After a longer time than should be, you hear a distant "oof" far down below you in the darkness.
@cadey This is the 4th generation of the internet that I have seen. First was text-only pre-web (which may have been preceeded by a BBS era), then first version of the web, then the centralized internet of everything concentrated on a hadnful of sites which is what is dying now. We are going through the pains of that death and the birth of what comes next.
@cadey And billionaire idiots.
@cadey Indeed. The web forums and instant messengers of yesteryear are mostly forgotten now. The current generation of communications is overrun by massive corporations that have grown into monsters that overstep their bounds with arrogant impunity...
@cadey Ah, yes. My time has come again.
@cadey I was watching a video about the old internet the other day, it made me kind of sad to think about this corporatized version we have now
@cadey VCs had one bad year and decided to destroy the internet
@cadey So is the Fediverse is that rough beast slouching to Bethlehem?

YouTube
@cadey He’ll is empty and all the devils are here. 😈
@cadey This is exactly what everyone said when corporations took over the internet. Then reiterated it when ads appeared on every site. Then again when everything started requiring a subscription. Then walled in gardens. What's happening now is the logical follow-up.
@cadey the dawn of Web 1.5v2 is now
@cadey
The old internet died with Google Reader.
@cadey If, in your hour of need, you stand before a certain long barrow and beat the sacred drum, then Geocities and Altavista and AOL Instant Messenger will rise from their endless slumber and save the world.
@cadey the center cannot hold, the falcon cannot hear the falconer, the blood-dimmed tide is loose etc
@cadey Pull up the drawbridge of the castle, I say. Stay inside until things get better. Or maybe not.
