Reddit has now sufficiently broken their own site that moderators of the blind community's subreddit who are themselves blind can no longer access the moderator tools.

This statement by the mod team is worth a read to understand the full extent of the failure.

Edit: it's also worth noting that this community now has a dedicated Lemmy instance. https://RBlind.com

Edit 2: Here are archived copies of the mod team's post for those who don't want to click a Reddit link.

@Rob_T_Firefly Good thing that r/blind moderators had planned for their instance on lemmy before it went even more bad!
@xogium Good point! I should have added https://RBlind.com to my post, I'll edit it in now.
RBlind - A community on Lemmy, brought to you by the moderators of the /r/blind subreddit.

Lemmy

@Rob_T_Firefly Fwiw, Luna4reddit 1.4.0 was released today and adds an impressive array of moderation tools.

Maybe that could at least help, for the world of the pc at any rate.

@xogium @Rob_T_Firefly Moving is absolutely the right move, but lawyering up to fuck Reddit would be awesome too.
@dalias @xogium @Rob_T_Firefly The ADA has *really big* teeth.

@kithrup @dalias @Rob_T_Firefly Personally I would just not bother.

I mean, sure accessibility is important, but with the way reddit CEO has been acting, and reddit folks over all, I think it's just suiting to leave them to wallow in their own dug grave they've been busy at making. Leave them to rot, and long live the fediverse.

@xogium @dalias @Rob_T_Firefly The ADA allows an affected person to sue to get the changes done, and recover legal costs.

@kithrup @dalias @Rob_T_Firefly I wonder how much of that is actually true or worth it.

If it was true, why are so many apps and websites still not accessible to us? Like *cough* uber eats.

Like, I'm just doubtful it even matters that much, but it might be my scinical side talking.

@xogium @dalias @Rob_T_Firefly There are a bunch of factors that go into it, but if you *had* accessibility, and *made it worse*, most of those go away.

@kithrup @dalias @Rob_T_Firefly Can we say that they had it though? Also then that means uber eats can be attacked for this too.

Tons and tons of unlabelized buttons in the main screen of the uber eats app on ios for about a month by now, it moves you this way and that on the screen also.

Android's app is no better, as it has the move everywhere problem on top of not saying the names of items when you're trying to buy grossery.

@xogium @dalias @Rob_T_Firefly As I am not impacted, and am not a lawyer, not much I can do. (I *have* had to implement various accessibility things, however.)
@xogium @kithrup @Rob_T_Firefly Point is to further burn down prospects for an IPO.
@xogium @kithrup @dalias Folks giving up and leaving them to it is exactly what they want. They don't want to suffer the social, legal, or public-relations consequences of their crappy actions.
@Rob_T_Firefly @kithrup @dalias So what wopuld you recommend then? What's something we could do? Besides the ADA complain that is.
@xogium @Rob_T_Firefly @kithrup Everything that accelerates the burning of the company and cuts off their opportunities to stop bleeding cash.
@Rob_T_Firefly @kithrup @dalias Oops, typoed the last message but yeah... What's something that would have enough of an impact?

@xogium @kithrup @dalias One thing is to keep shouting it from the mountaintops like we're doing. Spread the word, make sure that people out there are aware of what Reddit is doing and at what cost.

For most people out there Reddit is some big website they may or may not know much about, maybe they use it and maybe they don't, but it's popular enough that the mainstream is pretty aware it's a thing that exists. An optimal outcome would be spreading the word so successfully that the average person on the street goes from "Reddit... that's a website, right? I've seen links from it once or twice" to "Reddit... that's that website that screws over people with disabilities, right? I saw a thing on the news about how they don't care."

@Rob_T_Firefly @xogium @kithrup CEO really has no idea what he wants except to lash out at everyone who doesn't respect his authority. Making him "find out" via what happens to his job when the IPO implodes is gonna be sweet.
@Rob_T_Firefly and then Elon said: hold my beer.... If people cannot read or post i've broken mine more
@Rob_T_Firefly does this mean we can do whatever tf we want for the rest of the day
.@Rob_T_Firefly To supplement, for US people affected by this, here is where to file a complaint under the ADA: https://www.ada.gov/file-a-complaint/#filing-a-complaint-with-the-department-of-justice-civil-rights-division
File a Complaint

The ADA provides an important tool to fight discrimination: filing a complaint with an appropriate federal agency. This page outlines the steps to do so.

@Rob_T_Firefly Would really love this to push for an active Lemmy/kbin/fork sprint/codeathon dedicated to accessibility and a11y in order to make it as accessible as can be.

@Rob_T_Firefly Classic enshittification:

1) Build your userbase on open access
2) Promise to stay open forever
3) Undercut your competition by VC money and stock tricks
4) When you think the users have no other choice, become the end-level boss

@Rob_T_Firefly it’s so sad that these communities and resources are becoming unusable just because of the desire for money

@Rob_T_Firefly

Highlights (for me) from the full mod announcement:

“Reddit made a business decision to effectively remove users' access to third-party apps and must assure that access by its own means.”

“If Reddit Inc wants to deny service to disabled people, they must make that statement.”

“Disabled redditors will not accept being quietly whisked away, nor will the broader Reddit community. People make Reddit and people can break Reddit.”

@bpettis Right? I actually punched the air reading that.
@Rob_T_Firefly well guess I have a reason to use Lemmy now
@Rob_T_Firefly It'd be nice if people include what's written on that comment, cuz I'm not clicking that link :/

@Rob_T_Firefly I'm learning everyday of alternatives to the "big sites." I never heard of Lemmy or Tilde until the Reddit API changes.

The founder of Lemmy is a political extremist and a bigot

Attached: 1 image The founder,developer,operator of Lemmy may be a racist, a homophobe, and even a neo Nazi. @beforewisdom Reason to stay off the instance that developer controls. The RBlind instance has nothing to do with them. They have also been vocal about needing to use something that currently just works rather than wait for another platform to sufficiently mature, and Lemmy was pretty much the only choice; there's some of the discussion at https://www.rblind.com/post/1791750 .

Everyone has to make their own choices when benefiting from the work of awful people. Do we still accept a needed ride in a modern Volkswagen-made vehicle even though the company was started by the nazis? Should most of the Linux installs out in the world include support for the ReiserFS filesystem even though the developer turned out to be a murderer? Can I still live in my country despite it being founded on oppression and genocide? These sorts of questions are everywhere, and so many things in our day-to-day lives can be connected to the actions of truly bad people if we dig deeply enough.

I can fully understand not supporting things which directly reward awful people in tangible ways. I wouldn't use the Lemmy instance the developer runs, or contribute money to that project. However as open-source software like Lemmy effectively doesn't belong to anyone (or, to put it another way, belongs to *everyone*) I personally find it good to see such things used by people who can benefit without directly rewarding the person in question, and in fact used for the tangible benefit of communities directly opposed to his brand of bullshit.

@Rob_T_Firefly

@beforewisdom @XioNYC

reiserfs is a non-issue. It was deprecited long ago, and no on uses it anymore. Reiserr 4/5 is out of tree and will never be merged. Rieser was dumped like a bad habbit. There are no shortage of FSs in linux.

So, distros made their choice already

People need to understand that “You don’t need to agree or give a nod to the developer’s political leaning or beliefs.” If you use Pleroma (or Akkoma for that matter), you are not endorsing or agreeing to their politics. You sometimes wonder if such things are dug up/spread by their rivals/competitors using an Alt account or nickname.

And the usual:

  • IBM provided the database that catalogued all the Nazi internment camp prisoners.

  • Hugo Boss designed and made those Nazi uniforms.

  • Henry Ford was a member of the Nazi Party.

  • Iranian scientists used Windows 2000 even though they might be crying ‘Death to America’ at home.

@beforewisdom “Political extremist” is a worthless condemnation that can be and is applied to anyone who opposes the violently oppressive status quo of capitalism. parentis_shotgun has never pretended to be anything but a Marxist-Leninist, and lemmy.ml is explicitly ML.

I would be more concerned about the bigotry claim. However, when I looked into it, the only source is a contact of the sixth author of a paper parentis_shotgun linked once. I see no reason to condemn them for it.

@swrdghcnqstdr

He is a tankie, an authoritarian communist. He defends genocide, and he is a homophobe.

His politics are a different color but he is the same type of person as a neo-nazi, a white supremacist.

Read the post, read the comments, follow the links.

He isn't your friendly campus Marxist.

If he had his way he would be rounding people up.

An interesting part from https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/14nzwkm/they_finally_did_it_reddit_made_it_impossible_for/

As u/MostlyBlindGamer explained to Reddit admins in modmail, "disability" is an interaction between a person's physical or mental characteristics and society's barriers. Your website's barriers. You are making people disabled by breaking your website and apps.

In case you wanted to see what would actually spur a reddit exodus, and what the alternative looks like in practice.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here

@Rob_T_Firefly

This is flat-out evil, yet also sadly common. As a low-vision user, I depend on controlling things like font size, colors, and contrast to make sites and apps usable. I use intrinsic settings, OS settings, and a11y tools to do this. It's a rare week when I don't lose a few hours fighting to make things usable again after thoughtless updates break my carefully constructed accommodations.

Every company talks about a11y. Few put their money where their mouth is.

@Rob_T_Firefly Thanks for this. I accessed via the archive post. I am sighted and 51. For this long passage of text presented in a format difficult for me to read I let my iPhone read it to me.
That closing is 🔥🔥🔥
