Hey masto, if you’ve been here for more than a few weeks and you really like your instance and have a minute, could you weigh in here and name it and say why you like it? We have new folks coming in and I never know where to point them for real-talk instance recs.

Would love to know whether your instance is open to new people, whether it strictly moderates abuse (racist, misogynist, anti-LGBT, disability-linked), how aggressive its defed policies are, whether it’s technically stable.

FWIW I’ve found mstdn.social to be generally well (strictly) moderated against abuse, no-nonsense about yeeting dogwhistlers into space, and technically solid. I like big instances because they help with the gaps in federated UX.

We’re defederated by a few instances for various philosophical reasons, and our main admin briefly defederated from another big instance over a disagreement a few weeks back, but then went back. Overall, I’ve had a good experience with the way the instance runs.

@kissane honest question, because i haven't posted here much yet: what about dark humor & clear sarcasm and stuff like that? just don't want to lose another social media account for jokingly calling someone a "h*nkey" 😞
@InnerPartisan I think it really depends on where you are here—a lot of people are making mod calls who aren’t necessarily speaking English as a first language/being fluent in US cultural dynamics.
@InnerPartisan @kissane I would assume you are safe as long as you are using the sarcasm font.
@kissane the same admin manages a few other instances, namely masto.ai (which I'm registered on), and mastodon.coffee. he's overall a Decent Human Being.
@kissane I’m on the same instance and generally agree with your assessments. But I am going to point out that we had a recent repeat of the .art dustup because our admin defederated from a much smaller instance (Tooters.org) apparently due to a tiff with their admin. That bugs me because I think that using defederation for such reasons is unfair to other users. Why not just block the other person instead? That would seem to be a far more proportional solution.
@kissane I’m still on the big mainstream instance. Am I missing anything?
@kissane I'm on Glammr.us an instance specifically for GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) folks. They take moderation seriously and have a team but they're not super strict either. About 1000 users. Registration is by mod approval. If those people are your people I highly recommend it. I really like being on a smaller instance.
@jessamyn I feel like it should be GLAM! with the bang on the end

@kissane Cosign the mstdn.social @stux endorsement!

They're on top of their stuff, issues get resolved near instantaneously, cute cat pictures, what more could you want?

@kissane I'm quite happy with hcommons.social. It's open for registrations, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

The local timeline is mostly academic-ish or generally bookworm-ish, but it's a good crowd.

There haven't been any moderation shenanigans, and the admins folks involved all seem like steady hands with deep experience involving scale prior to starting a Fedi instance. I often don't see or hear anything from the more clearly abusive instances, so I assume they must do regular preemptive defederation with some of the shared blocklists.

@kissane I second the recommendation of mstdn.social for the reasons you mention and would only add that @stux, the owner, has two adorable cats and he frequently posts photos of them (not a deluge but enough to make this cat-lover happy).

@kissane
I really like nerdculture.de

The moderation is A1 and proactive. Feel totally safe as an LGBT+ member of the community.
It's a mix of English and German speaking accounts but that's cool with me.
And I'm a nerd, so I'm at home!

@kissane Some bias since I host it, but I love peoplemaking.games because we've got a lovely queer-majority mod team, and lots of brilliant, friendly games-folk talking about stuff they're making and things they love

@kissane
so I am a part of https://cyberfurz.social/about it's been very pleasant it is administrated by @hack13 and I like my instance because it's really small and there's a good sense of community especially the social VR community it feels really comfy and nice

and I believe it has a zero tolerance Policy towards sexism, racism, discrimination, and hate speech.

but unfortunately it is on a acceptance basis but members can invite people

CyberFurz

A Mastodon Instance open to all! That said we do have a minor focus on Tech, 3D Art, VRChat, Neos, ChillOut, SecondLife, etc... Come chill with other CyberFurz!

@kissane I like my instance because the computer it's running on is sitting right next to me and if it does anything weird I can pull the plug

@kissane phpc.social is populated by PHP developers, who tend to be pretty good folks. We have a mod team of 10 or so, in theory, including me. Most reports are acted on before I even see them. The other mods are fairly on the ball.

We generally only defederate for harboring hate groups. No plans to get into the whole FB kerfuffle until/unless FB actually does something.

@kissane sunny.garden is a cute space of friendly crafty people with a mod who seems to be taking good care of it. 🪴☀️
@blinkygal @kissane I second this, I'm very happy on sunny.garden. It's cozy, artsy, inclusive, technically stable and actively moderated. New people are very welcome, but there's a daily limit on signups at the moment because of the latest influx.
@kissane I really love @mastodon.social it's huge and friendly but I know there are been non disclosure talks with meta which is a huge no no for me. I ve just signed up with a smaller server to use if this goes wrong
@kissane haven't had any technical or interpersonal problems. Seems to be open for regs. There's some Nebraska instance I see activity from on the fedifeed sometimes too. It's nice to connect with neighbors.
@kissane Thanks for sharing and trying to connect new people, Erin! I’m a cultural heritage worker (librarian/archivist) and I like my instance at glammr.us, specifically for those working in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (the GLAM in glammr.us). It’s a smaller instance but nicely run and I’ve so far seen no BS.
@kissane Mine (urbanists.social) is open to new people (sometimes we have approval requirements, sometimes not). The admins are good at moderating, helped by the fact that we aren't very large (I think 1.5K active users) and a chunk of accounts are professional orgs. The local feed isn't to everyone tastes, though plenty of us post stuff unrelated to urbanism. I think we're technically stable, but I'm not a techy. And we do defed regularly from icky places (the list is public).
@kissane I landed at tech.lgbt after mastodon dot lol happened, and it has been a generally nice place to be. The local timeline is nice if you are queer and nerdy, the mod team is well-staffed, and the instance is up-front and comprehensive about its policies — in particular it's one of the few smallish instances I found that actually had a DMCA agent listed. They are perhaps a wee bit heavier on the defed / mute pedals than I'd generally prefer, which can mess with reading some threads, but on the balance I can live with that.
@kissane hachyderm.io has been a great server. Tech heavy, LGBTQ+ friendly, active admins who seem decently supported. It's been stable and free of ick.

@dave_andersen @kissane Seconding this. Super-stable infra + working on a community governance model. Moderation has felt clearly focused on an expansive notion of safety:

https://community.hachyderm.io/docs/rule-explainer/

Also notable is the commitment to proactive member education, including an impressively thorough take on accessibility:

@kissane dice.camp is a solid option for anyone involved in tabletop role-playing gaming. Appropriate moderation; blocks the worst instances but doesn't go overboard.
@KeithAmmann I was annoyed that they blocked m.s outright a while back. I was already in the process of moving so that wasn’t the reason I left but I did lose many followers/follows and am still not certain I’ve recovered 100%.
@caleb Yeah, so was I. But I think Sage learned from users' reaction to that move, and he's much less trigger-happy than, say, mastodon.art.
@KeithAmmann glad to hear it. I still think m.s users should view it as purely a stepping off point. It’s a shame so many see it as the “main” place to be still.
@kissane I'm on cosocial.ca (https://cosocial.ca), a member-funded co-op for all Canadian residents. I like it a lot. It feels friendly and calm, and has a great group of welcoming, sociable members.There are 50-100 members (I think), which is a nice size for the local timeline to not be overwhelming. CoSocial is open to new members, and it's stable, and well-run. AFAIK the admins strictly moderate abuse, but I don’t know what the de-fed policies are.

@kissane I love my server social.ridetrans.it. It's local (Puget Sound area) and focused on things I'm interested. The about page sums up their values well: https://social.ridetrans.it/about

@kissane

Not using a mastodon, instance, using a CalcKey instance. Originally started on the big Mastodon server, but it didn't support things like text formatting. Initially switched to CalcKey.social, but its frequent performance problems and then a major outage caused me to switch to a
much smaller instance running the CalcKey software.
@kissane infosecc.exchange led by @jerry, very experienced, extremely capable, judicious, thoughtful, and expertly run.
@kissane Hachyderm is 💯. Moderates abuse and hate, does not do defederation shenanigans, excellent technical ops capability.

@kissane I'm not entirely sure whether this fits your intentions, but your post just inspired me to write a thread about self-hosting your own instance instead of joining an existing one:

Michael (@[email protected])

There's another migration from Twitter ongoing, and a lot of posts on instance choice, and I would like to add to those with another choice: Your very own self-hosted instance. Because to me, that was what motivated me to try the Fediverse: I could self-host my own social media! But there are also a couple of downsides I would like to highlight. Homelabbers, add your own experiences, especially with implementations other than Mastodon! #HomeLab #TwitterMigration #SelfHosted 1/x

@kissane I like my instance moo.nz because I'm not at the arbitrary whims of another admin. It's invite based, but happily extend invites to people I have a connection with.
@kissane I’m on toot.wales, it’s good to see some Welsh language posts and people living in Wales as well as the diaspora and friends.
@kissane I’m on vis.social where a lot of visual artists and creators are. Well run, reliable, mods are nice and are helpful when I have questions.

@kissane My partner and I are on our own self-hosted Mastodon (and also Lemmy now) instance.

It's obviously not for everyone, but I personally think the self-hosted route is a pretty good way to go if you have the aptitude and have a bit of experience w/ the fediverse.

Gives you complete control of who you're associating with.

@kissane

The various big infosec focused ones are really solidly run, I would recommend them even to friends who aren't part of that professional community. @jerry's instance is pretty much the gold standard for what I'd look for if I ever decide that self hosting isn't worth it

@phil @kissane wow. Thank you for the kind words

@kissane I'm a mod at heads.social so biased but fyi

It's a music freak/psychedelic oriented group, lot of deadheads and bluegrass, jazz, psych rock, weirdo music style fans and counter culture folks, but all good people are welcome. Very small instance, very stable, patreon supported. Open with approval.

No tolerance for haters, racists etc. abuse = yeet.

Absolutely pro queer/trans with love ✊🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We follow fediblock convos and lists & defed obvious loser/abuser platforms

scicomm.xyz
musicians.today
sunny.garden

scicomm.xyz as my "main" is the one I've seen most of, & their moderation seems sound so far :-)

They all have themes, and when you request an account, you say a little bit about your connection to the theme. Taking the three in order,
- scicomm obviously
- playing music inc for enjoyment
- creativity in general iirc.

I think last I looked, all three were open to new sign-ups. (Mid-sized instances do shut intermittently if getting too full.)

@kissane
chaos.social. It is well moderated, from people in the chaos sphere (CCC) who are opinionated.
Ofc I know the admins from events and they try to stay small. They hope for others to start instances as well and support them.

There is no BS with emotional defedaration and refederation from mods as this breaks connections, as other big instances sometimes do.

The instance is run by a e.V.
https://meta.chaos.social/

I believe in smaller instances and hence would avoid bigger ones.

@kissane

For those peeps who live in Canada, I highly recommend mstdn.ca. It’s well run, well moderated, and stable. A great community here on the fediverse.

Also, for people who decide to make Mastodon their new home, please donate what you can to your admins to help with server maintenance costs. Admins volunteer a ton of time to keep us up and running. Show ‘em some love! 😀

@kissane I'm on indieweb.social, and love it. It's an extremely groovy mix of technical, policy, generally OSS-involved or adjacent, generally progressive-minded people. It tends to rely on moderation, and employs defederation very selectively. I've never seen hate speech or other nastiness.

Also impressed with hachyderm.io and infosec.exchange, and I support all three instances financially.

@kissane I have been on mastodon.social since 2017. I like it because it's stable, I like large instances because there's more content to find through hashtag search and the local/federated timelines and trending are more diverse (and when full search arrives there will be more to search). I have no direct visibility into how good moderation is in general but the few times I was targeted the malefactors were dealt with swiftly. No personal complaints.
@kissane @JamesGleick I love my server. defcon.social. It’s run by the same folks who run the DEFCON infosec convention, so tech-leaning and hacker type users. Good anti-abuse policies, stable, just about the right size. They run a good convention so I trust them to run this server well.
@kissane @JamesGleick mastodon.online. Mostly reliable. Never any sense of anything but friendliness to POC and LGBTQ+ or the differently abled. And no visible drama. No…visible…drama…is….huge.Way too much admin drama has been visible to me elsewhere. The Fediverse can be a real magnet for drama in ways that are ultimately self destructive. Diversity needs to include diversity of (fact/science aware and inequality mindful) opinion.
@kissane I've been on here awhile and never had an issue with Mastodon. I've seen a few instances of covid disinformation but no bigotry.
@kissane I’m on vmst.io and really like it over there. Was on mastodon.social since the beginning but went to vmst.io in December 2022 when the giant waves of Twitter folks started rolling in. The “motto” is “Mastodon for respectful technologists, geeks and nerds of every type and stripe.” Don’t recall having a single stability issue, and all their polices are on the About page at https://vmst.io/about.

@kissane love mine. Safe, thoughtful, Canadian.
@kissane au.social seems steady enough.
Migrated here after another au instance decided to end.
(That process was fairly painless, except you have to leave your old toots.)
Chose it because of location.
@kissane I like toot.wales. I don’t have any Welsh family (though I learned a bit of the language actually because of choosing this server!). The local feed is very homey and welcoming and shows a world seemingly quieter and closer than the one I know where I live, making it a double-nice respite.
@kissane oh and it seems well-run and has sufficient financial resources to stay that way for now
@kissane I like it because I run it and it's just me, which I realise isn't remotely helpful.
@kissane My instance isn't taking new members because it's just for me! It's really easy to stand up a single user instance if that is what people want.
