Why do #Unix or #Linux users prefer using vim over nano?

Because they enjoy the thrill of the hunt before they start editing a file!

@nixCraft I don't.

I just want to change shit and get things done.

I'm just looking for a non-#GNU / #FSF - associated alternative to #nano that just works...

@nixCraft prefer VIM’s power and flexibility. Besides, once you put in the time to learn it, it gets hard to interact with text in other ways.
@jessearmstrong @nixCraft When I am forced to use word/libreoffice my text often has things like kkcwfoo
or
ct"bar
@nixCraft can't say much about that one chief😅

@nixCraft as long as I don't have to use emacs I'm fine!

Ctrl+shift+front+super+hyper+meta+greek+ß
If I wanted to press that many keys at the same time I would learn to play the organ!

@nixCraft i prefer nano. But it is not available on embedded system with low space for tools, vi is always available 😜.
@nixCraft if you use VIm frequently, you can become very productive. I even use Chrome/Firefox and VSCode plugins to use the same key combinations. People are fascinated by my speed navigating webpages, without leaving the keyboard and much faster than with the mouse.
@nixCraft naaah! It‘s just my muscle memory typing vim and hammering ESC a lot
@nixCraft and then there are distros that ship with nano as the shell default for editor and vim not installed or some tiny version installed. reminds of the days of default IE install and the antitrust trial that finally led to default install and forcing default of chromium edge instead.
@nixCraft meanwhile I'm using nano daily.
@nixCraft My very first thing to do is installing nano after installing a new system
@nixCraft Switched to micro. Better to control.
@nixCraft ed for me thank you. I don't need all those fancy features of vi (don't get be started on vim)
@nixCraft Who says we do? Not everyone enjoys extremely over-engineered text editors.
