One year of System Settings, how are people feeling about it? 👍⚙️👎
@BasicAppleGuy 🤷🏻‍♂️ some things are more buried, some are more logical
@todrobbins @BasicAppleGuy That's the issue I've had with it. Time Machine used to be front and center and now I have to search for it.
@BasicAppleGuy I am in 100% agreement that the UI should be consistent across platforms, but search and discovery are really poor — so much worse than the previous design.
@michaelrjohnson @BasicAppleGuy Agreed, although the previous design was also pretty poor, it's just we had gotten so used to it. The overwhelming chaos of settings/preferences are there in both designs and the confusion doesn’t seem to have been really addressed
@donmacdonald @BasicAppleGuy I agree with you there. The categorization (and hodgepodge of UI norms across the years) was messy, though my recollection is that search was better.
@BasicAppleGuy Meh. It’s weird that it always starts in ‘Appearance’, and there’s still some graphical bugs but overall I’m mostly used to it.
@avakining never noticed that it always start there. I guess that makes some sense to start at one spot as opposed to where you left off since that might keep changing.
@BasicAppleGuy I like the layout but lots of stuff can't be found by Spotlight anymore.
@BasicAppleGuy still confusing. Things behind multiple clicks now. Always opens in Appearance for some reason. It’s the least used setting I change.
@BasicAppleGuy it looks nicer but is way less intuitive. time machine and file sharing being under “general” is completely illogical to me
@BasicAppleGuy completely broken. Even basics like search don’t work 👎
@BasicAppleGuy I liked it at first since it’s cleaner than before. But I prefer the old one now because I have no idea where things are.
@BasicAppleGuy still don't like it. Some things are buried in categories that make zero sense and searching for things doesn't always work, or at least not how I want it to. Searching for 'full disk access' brings you to Privacy & Security, but if the window isn't big enough, you don't see it
@BasicAppleGuy Got used to it. I agree with the idea of consistency as part of the ecosystem
@BasicAppleGuy i like having a sidebar compared to the previous UI but the organization is really bad compared to the previous one and some areas still make no sense
@BasicAppleGuy Still really a challenge to find what I'm looking for. Decades of glanceable muscle memory are still aching from the change.
@BasicAppleGuy System Preferences needed an update but System Settings just feels so alien and amateur
@BasicAppleGuy I could never find anything in System Preferences. This is much more in line with iPad and iPhone, so overall it's a win for me. 👍
@BasicAppleGuy Dazed and confused. 😵‍💫
@BasicAppleGuy Huge 👎. A year in and I can still never find anything that I'm looking for. Organization is such a huge disaster, I'm still flabbergasted it shipped like this.
@BasicAppleGuy This System Settings app is the worst thing Apple could have done to macOS.
@BasicAppleGuy I’m mostly…fine with it? I can find most of if the settings, and for those that I can’t, a quick google search solves it. Not really sure where all the bellyaching is coming from tbh
@BasicAppleGuy The old layout was awful. However the new layout does hide some settings in weird places and is a little slower than the old layout. But I much prefer the new layout compared to the old one. Could be improved though!
@BasicAppleGuy Too bland, generally poor use of both tight and large space (poor use of scrollviews, poor choices of layout, poor use of modality), lack of information smell, can improve with a lot of work 🙂

@BasicAppleGuy 👍🏻 the old system prefs were a mess. The new one isn’t perfect. But no 1.0 is perfect.

In terms of trajectory: change is good. Staying with the devil you know is not good.

@BasicAppleGuy Thumbs down. It wasn’t a perfect design before and the idea of rethinking it was good. What we were given was not an improvement, though. I find it significantly harder to navigate and use.
@BasicAppleGuy I think I would be ok with it if it would just open with the top-most setting selected instead of “Appearance”. Do other people change their appearance often? I haven’t done anything since I switched to full time dark mode several years ago.
@BasicAppleGuy Still use the search field almost every time 😆
@BasicAppleGuy it works fine. I’m only ever in it if I need to fetch a password. Otherwise, when I do need to change something I never find it frustrating. 👍🏻
@BasicAppleGuy 👎 everything I need urgently is buried away.
@BasicAppleGuy It was bad in beta, it was bad at release and it still hasn't gotten better: 👎👎👎
@BasicAppleGuy
Mostly better than before but some settings are hard to find - if not search is used.
But overall more modern UI which I like.
@BasicAppleGuy I still prefer the old version, but I’m getting used to it.
@BasicAppleGuy meh. I guess it does make categorization marginally better, depending on the item, but it’s very much a hot mess. It needs more love. It needs work. 👎🏼
@BasicAppleGuy super buggy. The less I have to use it, the better.
