@davorb while quantifiable, I'm not sure it's enough to deter advertisers, sadly. I work in this space.

@JohnMFlores yeah, but lack of moderation definitely will. remains to be seen how the new moderators do.

@davorb All advertisers care about is reaching their target audience. They measure the effectiveness of an ad by how much it costs to reach that target group and what percentage of the group clicks on the ad. As long as that is happening cost-effectively on #Reddit, they will stay.

Why would they leave Reddit? Here are some scenarios:

1-their target audience leaves in sufficient numbers to make Reddit ineffective for them. Poor moderating may lead to less engaging content and less user engagement. But advertisers won't leave simply because the quality of moderation declines. There'll need to be a tipping point and their ad performance on Reddit will need to drop compared to competing ad platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc...)

2-Ad prices increase. If Reddit traffic drops enough that they have to increase advertising rates to make up for reduced traffic, advertisers will start looking elsewhere.

3-they face activist pressure. This has worked in the past - advertisers don't like their ads adjacent to controversial content IF and only if they face public pressure to change.

We can look at Twitter as an example. The quality of the site has certainly dropped due to less moderation, more bots, etc, but advertisers are returning to the platform now that activist pressure has declined. Simply put, the consumers that advertisers need to reach are still there in large enough numbers.

Sadly, Reddit will not die as quickly as some would like.
