part 1/2
Many liken how the #fediverse work to #emails.
We all got emails but imagine if our email providers each had their own #SocialNetwork? All those emails are then our addresses so others can mention us in this network.
Then a #technology called #ActivityPub connects all these "emails" together so that we all can speak to each other if we want to.
Some "emails" look differently, ie. one might look like #Twitter (#Mastodon) and one might look like #Instagram (#PixelFed)...
I've been seeing this explanation since before I made an account and what I've learned is this explanation clarifies nothing.
My genuine alternative explanation? Don't worry about it, the whole federation thing doesn't matter 99% of the time. Just make an account on the site that looks like the site you're coming from and use it as normal. At one point a post will be a bit weird and somebody will tell you it's from a different service and you can look into it then.

Yep ... this is a key lesson. Our social-lizard brains are ultimately here for people and content. Just sign up and follow people and write posts and replies. Over time the technical understanding just doesn't matter any more, your social-lizard brain has found what it wants and knows which buttons to click to get it ... it's fine!
Thanks for the help, you ppl here are really welcoming!
I read some things about the technical side already, which is quite interesting and makes me wonder how I managed to miss all of this until now.
I also think it will (unfortunately) scare many people away who don't care about how it works.
Some practical help would indeed be great! E.g. how do I get content from #kbin to show up here without every post being unconnected to the respective thread
@svanelten @MudMan @runedancetwo
Yea, unfortunately, following a group/magazine/community on mastodon opens up a firehose. Nothing can really be done right now. If you're committed, creating an account on a kbin instance is the best bet.
