I've emptied out my #Reddit account, deleted all my posts and comments. There wasn't very much in there that's still worth talking about, but I have a few fond memories I'd like to share with you:

(a) an essay on moving away from GitHub that I wrote on /r/selfhosted
(b) the time I shared a Factorio clone (built in a software development student project I supervised) with the game's community
and (c) how I unexpectedly got contacted by Rand Miller.

A short 🧡thread.

A year ago I moved almost all my #OpenSource code away from #GitHub and into a self-hosted setup based on #GitWeb and integrated into my personal website. You can see the result here:  https://fietkau.software/git_repositories

A fair amount of work and thought went into it, so I wrote 1.5k-ish words on the why and how & posted them to the #SelfHosted subreddit. The essay is temp sheltered here: https://stuff.jfietkau.me/git

But I am contemplating bringing back my #blog (again) as a long-term home. πŸ€”

During the winter of 2022, I supervised a software development university project where groups of students were tasked with reimplementing popular games. I shared the resulting #Factorio homage  https://fietkau.science/student_project/programming_games#factorio with the game's community subreddit.

It was well-received there and the students got a lot of praise for their effort. I also got a number of comments from people who felt encouraged to experiment with #GameDev and got to offer my recommendations for first steps.

Student Project: Programming Games

In the Programming Project, teams of students develop their first full software project – a reimplementation of an existing game concept – from start to finish. In this process they are guided and supervised by a senior student tutor and a staff advisor.

Last one: 5 years ago I found an old copy of Myst IV Revelations Limited Edition. Rather than throw it out, I checked that the DVDs were still working and posted to the #Myst subreddit if anyone would want it gifted.

Imagine my surprise when one of the first people to reply was Rand frickin' Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds and one of the two original creators of Myst. He told me they didn't have a copy of the European Myst 4 Limited Edition yet. So I sent it, along with some German candy, to Cyan. πŸ˜€

If you, too, are deleting your old #Reddit contributions these days, the only advice I have is to edit them to gibberish before deleting. I did it manually, but I believe all the helper scripts also support this. That way, even if they bulk restore deleted comments to the last existing versions, at least those will still be useless for dataset farming.

Edit: Oh, and if you delete your Reddit account, all your posts and comments remain available. So if you want them gone, delete them first.

@julian Is there a user content download (and or en-gibberish-ifying) script that you'd recommend? Thanks!
@jkohlmann I don't have any recommendations from personal use since I did it by hand! But one that I've seen people mention this week is: https://redact.dev/services/reddit
