That’s new and a bit unsettling.

@paul Like your tires are going to melt?

(I assume Google is just adding any weather alert as affecting the route)

@johninfante This is Apple. And yeah, I've seen the same warning for thunderstorms here. They just show it for any warnings/watches in the area you're traveling.
@paul I think that's a little silly, tbh. Maybe show that if you selected cycling or walking directions. But for most people, that's pretty useless info when driving. Also: it's gonna be 100+ (feels like) for the next 3 months here, so the warning will simply become ignorable noise.
@leoncowle @paul I think having an excessive heat warning in Texas, no matter what, is rather important. You might feel its superfluous but on the contrary, I think it’s a stark reminder of how much hotter the earth is becoming.
@Zaczapico97 @paul Except if it’s shown everyday for several months in a row, and on top of that in a place where it’s mostly not particularly useful. Then it loses its impact and just becomes noise that gets ignored. Boy that cried wolf & all (which, yes, is an imperfect analogy).
@Zaczapico97 @paul Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying heat warnings are a waste of time. And raising public awareness isn’t either. Those are definitely important. But when you start shoving these in places where they don’t really contribute directly waters their effect down. Which is exactly the opposite of what needs to happen.

@leoncowle @paul

It's not 100+ heat index, it's 100+ period.
Plus, yeah, that's an important warning.
You'd better have a functional A/C.
You'd better not break down our run out of gas.

Even when driving at night, the blacktop will radiate enough head to make it too uncomfortable to drive with the window open.

@paul my mom said she was getting “route may be affected by tornado warning” yesterday, seems a touch irresponsible since routing around tornadoes isn’t really possible

@timzania @paul

You could not go!
That's an option.

@paul Similarly, Google Maps has some new features to help us navigate our climate crisis.
@bhaggs coming soon locusts and blood rain.
@paul Is it new? I remember getting tornado warnings on maps while driving through Florida a few years ago.
@paul made a similar drive yesterday and kept getting Tornado Watch notifications, fun!
@paul global warming is not a thing in the US, I heard

@paul I step out, put on my shades, and unlock my Bolt EV. Today is the day. I can feel it in the air. I look at the range indicator… it reads:

∞ INFINITY MILES

@paul
That is a bit of a concern!

One warning I notice still lacking from Apple Maps is mention of military action.

I just got driving directions from Kyiv to Sevastopol and the warning is “May include unpaved roads” and not “risk of mines” or “beware of artillery fire”.

@paul Alexa is greeting me every morning with the same. “Good morning. The world is on fire. Your next meeting is at 9 am.”
