The story of the internet is never let the money guys in
@ethanschoonover a good model for the world in general.
@ethanschoonover Pretty much everything to be honest…
@ethanschoonover
And the story of music, art etc, etc ;)
@JRepin
@lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin
So the Medici were also a negative influence on art? Or were they a different kind of money guys?
@wolf480pl @lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin I mean, they funded a lot of great art, but they also funded an unreasonable number of paintings that had Medicis in them. I kind of get the feeling we probably could have come up with a better way of funding brilliant renaissance art
@wolf480pl @lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin like, imagine the best and brightest artists of our time being forced to constantly paint portraits of Elon Musk or put Jeff Bezos in every crowd scene in order to be able to create their groundbreaking new work

*looks at the best and brightest youtubers*

yeah... I think renaissance artists didn't have much problem with that

@wolf480pl @lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin Yes, I'm sure the fact that youtubers are literally forced to shill for scammy companies in order to afford to eat can be taken as evidence that they are all happy and highly enthusiastic about their business relationship with the companies they are advertising, and likewise that renaissance artists had no problem whatsoever with the fact that their creative freedom depended on the largesse of wealth-hoarding dildos

@XauriEL @lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin
I think "literally forced" is an exaggeration - I'd expect that most youtubers had other career options, and *chose* youtube as a preferable one.

Also, some of them (eg. Tom Scott) are in a position where they can choose which companies they run ads for.

Also, if we can't come up with a better way to fund youtubers today, I highly doubt our ancestors could've come up with a better way to fund painters and especially architects back then.

@wolf480pl @lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin The Medici paid artists to make art for them, making it possible for them to live comfortably if not extravagantly and afford their materials. They did not attempt to pay them as little as possible (and nothing if it could be done) then resell at monstrous markups while plastering the works with ads.

@equinox_deschanel @wolf480pl @lps @JRepin yes. missed this initial reply about the medici but your rebuttal is correct, @equinox_deschanel . Also the money guys in that case knew they were not creators.

It's not a problem to use money to build things. it's a problem when VC then has the steering wheel. The growth of the internet came from passionate technologists. The moment the money guys grab the wheel their goal is drive fast and bail when they are about to crash.

@ethanschoonover @equinox_deschanel @lps @JRepin
In other words, the money guys we have in 21st century suck compared to the momey guys of the past?
@wolf480pl @ethanschoonover @lps @JRepin Very much so. The older patrons of the arts did ask for, and got, the best art available that made them look good, but they paid for it, and made sure the artists were still around to make more art, as that reflected well on them and enhanced their image as "so rich I can afford to pay this great artist to just make more art". Our 21st century oligarchs are only interested in what something will do to further line their pockets, and have no interest in the quality. It just has to sell, until it doesn't, and then they'll unload it.
@ethanschoonover Yes. Businesses have built walls and cut costs leaving users to struggle in a digital landscape that is a complete disaster of separated silos and incompatibilities with really bad #usability and #ux.
"Why should we add functions that only help users connect to other services?"
Everyone in the IT world should be embarrassed about this. And if you don't see the problems, you are probably part of the problem.
@ethanschoonover there are lots of internet businesses that could make a good living for their owners and workers. There aren’t any that can actually justify VC class returns or billionaire owners in the medium run.

@ethanschoonover

That’s an excellent insight. I couldn’t agree more.

@ethanschoonover
well, that's kinda the story of the whole world.

@ethanschoonover @runoutgroover they’ve been ruining everything since forever ago

@ethanschoonover Story of modern society, really.

Such a simple rule, but then greed.

@ethanschoonover pretty sure that's also in Deuteronomy from like, what, 400 BC or something
@ethanschoonover move along on the internet when the big money people come is maybe more more practical. Big money people tend to get their way….
