The story of the internet is never let the money guys in
@ethanschoonover
And the story of music, art etc, etc ;)

So the Medici were also a negative influence on art? Or were they a different kind of money guys?
@wolf480pl @lps @ethanschoonover @JRepin The Medici paid artists to make art for them, making it possible for them to live comfortably if not extravagantly and afford their materials. They did not attempt to pay them as little as possible (and nothing if it could be done) then resell at monstrous markups while plastering the works with ads.

@equinox_deschanel @wolf480pl @lps @JRepin yes. missed this initial reply about the medici but your rebuttal is correct, @equinox_deschanel . Also the money guys in that case knew they were not creators.

It's not a problem to use money to build things. it's a problem when VC then has the steering wheel. The growth of the internet came from passionate technologists. The moment the money guys grab the wheel their goal is drive fast and bail when they are about to crash.

In other words, the money guys we have in 21st century suck compared to the momey guys of the past?
@wolf480pl @ethanschoonover @lps @JRepin Very much so. The older patrons of the arts did ask for, and got, the best art available that made them look good, but they paid for it, and made sure the artists were still around to make more art, as that reflected well on them and enhanced their image as "so rich I can afford to pay this great artist to just make more art". Our 21st century oligarchs are only interested in what something will do to further line their pockets, and have no interest in the quality. It just has to sell, until it doesn't, and then they'll unload it.
